Product Description
Bob the blue-footed booby bird loves strutting along the beach and showing off his bright blue feet! The instructions are written in US crochet terms, with step by step photos detailing how to make the pieces and finish the toy. The body is worked from the top, with smaller details sewn on. To get the marled yarn effect the body is made with two strands of yarn held together - a DK weight cotton and a fingering/4-ply weight alpaca yarn. The other details are made in DK weight cotton. The finished bird made in similar yarns and hooks will stand around 28cm/11in tall.
Bob The Blue-Footed Booby Bird Amigurumi by Irene Strange
What Is Being Made
Bob The Blue-Footed Booby Bird is a crocheted amigurumi toy pattern designed by Irene Strange. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a stuffed bird character featuring the distinctive characteristics of a blue-footed booby, complete with detailed construction for body, features, and finishing touches. The finished piece is a soft, three-dimensional toy suitable for display or play.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary craft method. Amigurumi is a Japanese crochet technique that creates small, stuffed, three-dimensional figures through the use of tightly crocheted fabric worked in the round. The pattern is written in US Crochet Terms, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American terminology and abbreviations.
Crochet Stitches Used
The pattern employs a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to construct the amigurumi figure:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and structural elements
- Slip stitch (slst) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building dense, tight fabric characteristic of amigurumi
- Increase (inc) – used to expand sections and create shape
- Decrease (dec) – used to reduce stitches and shape the form
- Invisible decrease (inv dec) – creates seamless shaping for a polished appearance
- Decrease 3 stitches in 1 (sc3tog) – an intermediate technique for more dramatic shaping and detail work
- Magic ring – an advanced starting method that creates a closed center for working in the round
Materials and Yarn
The pattern uses a combination of high-quality yarns in two different weights for varied texture and effect:
Paintbox Cotton DK – A 100% cotton yarn in DK weight (50g/125m/137yds per ball) forms the primary material. The sample is made holding this yarn double for increased body and coverage. Multiple colors from this line are used:
- Yarn A: Champagne White (403) – approximately 40g / less than 1 ball
- Yarn B: Pure Black (402) – approximately 25g / less than 1 ball
- Yarn C: Washed Teal (433) – approximately 25g / less than 1 ball
- Yarn D: Misty Grey (404) – approximately 5g / less than 1 ball
KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud Fingering – A 100% superfine alpaca yarn in fingering weight (50g/182m/200yd per ball) is used for marled effects and fine detail work, adding softness and subtle texture variation:
- Yarn E: Anna (grey) – approximately 15g / less than 1 ball
- Yarn X: Sophia (white) – used for additional detail and contrast
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental crochet stitches like single crochet and basic increases and decreases, the inclusion of techniques such as invisible decreases, three-stitch decreases, and the magic ring method indicates this project is best suited for crocheters with prior experience. The construction of a three-dimensional amigurumi figure requires understanding of shaping, stitch placement, and the ability to work consistently in the round.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing crafters to access the instructions digitally and print them for reference during the project. The pattern is part of the Curious Amigurumi Patterns collection by independent designer Irene Strange.
