Product Description
Recently, my patterns have been inspired by nature and the sea. It is no secret that I love the peace and tranquility that walking along a deserted beach provides.
Walking along, nothing is identical, whether it is the sand dunes, driftwood, stones, shells or the puddles leftover by a receding tide.
The Boardwalk Can Cover is the second design in ‘The Explore Collection’. It reminds me of a boardwalk that I have walked down many times on holidays in Wales, United Kingdom. The lines represent the little gaps between the planks of wood.
The other two patterns in this collection are the Pebble Can Cover and the Little Stones Can Cover.
MY CAN IS BIGGER, CAN I STILL USE THIS PATTERN?
Yes! Instructions have been included within the pattern to allow you to adjust the size to fit a different size can or cylindrical container.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL STITCHES?
Some of the rounds in this pattern call for working in the third loop. A photo tutorial has been included to explain how to work this technique.
Boardwalk Can Cover by Hannah Visan
Project Overview
The Boardwalk Can Cover is a crocheted container cover designed by Hannah Visan as part of The Explore Collection. This intermediate-level crochet project transforms a simple beverage can into a decorative and functional storage container, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of coastal boardwalks and beach environments. The design captures the aesthetic of wooden planks with linear details that evoke the characteristic gaps found between boardwalk boards.
Design Inspiration and Purpose
Hannah Visan's recent pattern designs have been inspired by nature and the sea, reflecting her appreciation for the peaceful experience of walking along deserted beaches. The Boardwalk Can Cover specifically references a beloved boardwalk located at the end of a quiet country lane in Wales, United Kingdom, that serves as the only pathway down to the beach. The pattern's linear construction represents the small gaps between wooden planks, creating a visual connection to this cherished coastal location.
The concept of can covers has nostalgic roots in practical craft traditions. Visan originally created a similar project as a child in the Brownies, a girl group organization, where fabric strips were wrapped around cans to create pencil storage containers. Her original childhood can cover has endured for years and remains in use today, inspiring this modern crochet interpretation.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Boardwalk Can Cover is classified as an intermediate-level crochet project, making it suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to tackle more structured designs. The pattern employs crochet techniques to create a fitted cylindrical cover that wraps securely around a standard beverage can.
The design's distinctive linear pattern is achieved through strategic stitch placement and color work or textural variations that mimic the appearance of wooden boardwalk planks. These lines represent the gaps between boards, creating visual interest and authenticity to the design's inspiration.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and durability for a functional container cover. Worsted weight yarn works efficiently for this intermediate project, allowing stitches to be clearly visible and the finished cover to maintain its shape while fitting snugly around a can.
Crochet hooks appropriate for worsted weight yarn are used to construct the cover. The specific hook size will be detailed in the downloadable PDF pattern instructions to ensure proper gauge and fit.
Pattern Collection Context
The Boardwalk Can Cover is the second design in The Explore Collection, a series of patterns unified by nature-inspired themes and coastal aesthetics. This collection reflects Visan's design philosophy of drawing creative inspiration from natural environments, particularly beach and seaside locations.
