Product Description
Bly shawl’s color scheme and stitch pattern are reminiscent of the dark, gothic, and mysterious atmosphere of the Netflix series “The Haunting of the Bly Manor”, which I watched while thinking up this design – thus the name! The stitch pattern (which is from an old book) had been earlier mentioned on Instagram, and I thought it would be nice to use in a shawl. The shawl is constructed similarly to “Shelliana”, with increases along the side, and a few short rows to ensure it stays put while exploring the unknown of vast and creepy old manors, or just walking within the predictably secure confines of your own house.

What is Being Made
The Bly Shawl is a knitted shawl design inspired by the dark, gothic, and mysterious aesthetic of the Netflix series The Haunting of the Bly Manor. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters an intermediate-level project that combines intricate stitch work with atmospheric design elements.
Construction Method
The Bly Shawl is constructed using a similar structural approach to the designer's "Shelliana" pattern, providing a familiar framework for knitters already familiar with that design. This construction method allows for a well-balanced shawl structure that showcases the featured stitch pattern effectively.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The design features a distinctive stitch pattern sourced from vintage knitting references, creating visual interest through cable-inspired techniques. The pattern employs the following specialized stitches:
- 1/1 LPC (Left Purl Cross): Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front; purl 1 (together with its yarn over if needed); knit 1 from cable needle
- 1/1 M1P LPC: Slip yarn over to cable needle and hold in front, purl 1, make 1 purl; yarn over from cable needle (increases 1 stitch)
- 1/1 RPC (Right Purl Cross): Slip 1 stitch (together with its yarn over if needed) to cable needle and hold in back; knit 1; purl 1 (together with its yarn over if needed) from cable needle
- 1/2 LPC: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front; purl 2 (together with its yarn over if needed)
These cable crosses and purl combinations create the gothic stitch pattern that defines the shawl's visual character. Yarn overs are incorporated throughout to add lace elements and shaping to the design.
Materials Required
This knitting pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, making it suitable for delicate, refined stitch definition. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn and a cable needle for executing the cable cross stitches that form the pattern's foundation.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Bly Shawl is appropriate for knitters with solid foundational skills who are comfortable working with cable techniques, yarn overs, and reading complex stitch patterns. The combination of cable crosses and lace elements requires attention to stitch placement and yarn over management.
Designer Information
The Bly Shawl is designed by Hanna Maciejewska, an independent knitwear designer. This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is protected by copyright. For more information about this and other designs, knitters can contact the designer or visit the designer's website.
