Product Description
My daughter adores this cartoon so I decided to see if I could recreate Bluey. The test would be if my daughter recognised her … and thankfully she did!!
Knitted in DK yarn, the finished size is 70x60cm but can easily be enlarged by adding more rows and columns- I show you where to add within the pattern.
The pattern is simple to follow, and uses 200g of white plus small amounts of other colours so perfect for a stash buster.
Instantly available as a PDF after purchasing, the pattern includes: - chart - full written instructions - photographs
It is knitted in intarsia, a type of knitting which uses multiple colours to create a pattern or image.
Bluey Heeler Baby Blanket by Not Just Nanas Knit
Project Overview
The Bluey Heeler Baby Blanket is a charming intarsia design baby blanket inspired by the beloved character Bluey. This downloadable knitting pattern combines colorwork techniques with a delicate lace border, creating a finished piece that works beautifully as a nursery accessory or cherished gift. The design features a white background with strategic use of blues and lemon accents, though knitters are encouraged to customize the color palette to suit their preferences.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a baby blanket featuring an intarsia design inspired by Bluey. The blanket showcases a central colorwork motif set against a white background, finished with an elegant lace border that frames the entire piece. The combination of solid colorwork and openwork lace creates visual interest and texture variation throughout the finished blanket.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Knitting: The primary technique used for the Bluey design, allowing multiple colors to be incorporated into the fabric without carrying yarn across the back. This creates clean, professional-looking colorwork without bulk.
- Lace Knitting: Applied to the border, introducing openwork elements that add elegance and visual lightness to the blanket's edges.
- Bottom-Up Construction: The blanket is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easier adjustments and a natural progression through the pattern.
- Chart Reading: The pattern includes a chart for the intarsia design, requiring knitters to understand how to follow visual instructions alongside written guidance.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Stocking Stitch: Used for the main body of the blanket, creating a smooth, classic fabric that showcases the intarsia colorwork effectively.
- Lace Stitches: Applied to the border, featuring yarn overs and decreases that create decorative openwork patterns around the blanket's perimeter.
Materials and Specifications
The blanket is worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that provides good stitch definition for both the colorwork and lace elements. Any DK wool is suitable for this project, though the pattern notes that Stylecraft Special DK is an excellent choice due to its extensive color range, making it easy to find the whites, blues, and lemon shades required. The pattern specifies the use of knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, though specific needle sizes would be detailed within the full PDF instructions.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is best suited for knitters with some experience. The pattern provides both a chart and full written instructions, accommodating different learning styles and preferences. Knitters should have a solid understanding of how to read charts and be comfortable working intarsia sections while maintaining consistent tension. The inclusion of detailed lace border instructions ensures that even less-experienced lace knitters can successfully complete this element of the blanket.
Pattern Considerations
Attention to tension is particularly important during the intarsia sections to prevent the Bluey design from becoming distorted. Careful tension management ensures that the colorwork shapes remain crisp and well-defined throughout the knitting process. The combination of techniques and the need for color changes makes this an engaging project for intermediate knitters looking to expand their skills in colorwork and lace knitting.
