Product Description
Lovely bootee and hat set for any little one. Shown in blue for a baby boy, but change the color and it's great for any little girl, too! These precious bootees stay in place as there is a ribbon tie around the ankle. Both are soft and comfy for baby to wear. Pattern includes instructions for both bootees and hat.
Debbie Bliss Merino DK is wonderful - soft, durable, and comes in great colors. Also would work well in Sublime Extra Fine Merino DK.
This is a very easy set to make. The hat is worked in the round. The bootees are knitted flat with a 3-needle bind off along the sole.
Bluebird Bootees and Hat by Sharon Mooney
Project Overview
The Bluebird pattern (K143) is a knitting design by Sharon Mooney that creates a coordinated set of bootees and a matching hat, sized for infants aged 3 to 6 months. This intermediate-level knitting project combines classic construction techniques with delicate finishing details, making it an ideal choice for crafters with foundational knitting skills who are ready to tackle slightly more complex shaping and assembly.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces two complementary garments designed to work as a coordinated set:
- Bootees: Soft, fitted footwear for infants, constructed to provide warmth and comfort for tiny feet
- Hat: A matching cap designed to coordinate with the bootees and provide head coverage for babies in the 3 to 6 month size range
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Bluebird pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create its finished pieces. The construction utilizes both circular and flat knitting methods, allowing crafters to work efficiently while maintaining consistent gauge throughout the project.
Circular knitting is used for portions of the design, worked on a 16-inch circular needle to create seamless rounds. This technique is particularly useful for constructing hat crowns and other cylindrical sections without the need for seaming. Double-pointed needles are employed for smaller circumference sections, such as the leg portions of the bootees, where circular needles become impractical.
The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques to shape the garments, including K2tog (knit two stitches together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) methods. These decreases are essential for tapering the hat crown and shaping the bootee feet to fit properly. Stitch markers help track pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds, while stitch holders temporarily secure stitches during construction, allowing the crafter to work on different sections before final assembly.
Stitches Used
The Bluebird pattern is built on classic knitting stitches that create a smooth, refined fabric suitable for baby garments:
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds and purl rounds in circular knitting). This produces the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of traditional knitwear
- Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch used to build the fabric structure
- Purl stitch (P): Used to create texture variations and pattern definition
- Decreases (K2tog and ssk): Essential for shaping the hat crown and bootee feet to achieve proper fit and silhouette
- Slip stitches (Sl): Used for various construction purposes, including edge finishing and pattern transitions
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Bluebird pattern calls for approximately two skeins of Debbie Bliss Merino DK yarn in color #2252 (a blue shade that coordinates with the pattern's name). Each skein contains 50 grams of yarn with a yardage of 110 meters, providing sufficient yardage for both the bootees and hat. The yarn is composed of 100% Merino wool, a natural fiber prized for its softness, breathability, and temperature-regulating properties—ideal characteristics for baby garments.
The DK (double knitting) weight yarn is a versatile medium weight that works well for infant clothing, creating fabric that is neither too dense nor too delicate. At the specified gauge of 6 stitches and 8.5 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch, this yarn weight produces a fabric with excellent drape and comfort.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires size US 4 knitting needles in two configurations:
- One 16-inch circular needle for working larger circumference sections in the round
- A set of four size US 4 double-pointed needles for working smaller circumference sections, such as the bootee legs and feet
Additional tools needed include two stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction, a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds and track pattern repeats, and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in yarn ends and any necessary seaming.
