Product Description
Bluebell Socks, the socks Alice would wear!
Who the fudge is Alice you might ask. Remember the girl that chased the white rabbit and ended up to a tea party and almost had her head cut of by the Queen! That Alice! Through whole the process of these socks I fantasized of having an Alice like model for the photoshoot and the photoshoot would be held in a field of harebells and daisies! As you can see, that hasn’t happened! But I can use my words to paint you the picture! Scottish Bluebells or Harebells are my absolute favorite flowers! I’ve loved them since I was a little girl. Scottish Bluebells are found growing in meadows frequented by hares. Some would argue, the name Harebell was given this flower due to the fact that witches were known to turn themselves into hares and hide among them.
This pattern uses Shadow Wrap (AKA Twin Stitch Knit) short row for the heel. (Row by row tutorial in the pattern)
Pattern is test knitted.
Bluebell Socks by Artesanitarium Designs
Project Overview
Bluebell Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks inspired by Scottish Bluebells, the beloved wildflowers found growing in meadows. This intermediate-level knitting project combines traditional sock construction with the beauty of nature-inspired design. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working in the round and managing multiple stitches.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a complete pair of socks using the top-down construction method. The design celebrates the delicate bell-shaped flowers of Scottish Bluebells, translating their botanical beauty into a wearable knitted garment. The socks are designed to fit an average adult foot and showcase the characteristic stitch patterns that evoke the graceful, drooping bell flowers.
Knitting Techniques
Bluebell Socks employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern utilizes magic loop or double-pointed needle (dpn) construction for working in the round, allowing for seamless sock construction. Knitters will work through the leg, heel, foot, and toe sections using consistent tension and stitch management. The pattern requires understanding of gauge adjustment to ensure proper fit and the ability to work decreases for the toe shaping.
Stitches Used
The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for everyday socks. The gauge is established at 24.5 stitches and 31 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working stockinette stitch in the round. This gauge specification is essential for achieving the correct sock dimensions and ensuring proper fit on the foot.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern requires 280 to 300 meters (306 to 328 yards) of DK or Worsted weight yarn, calculated at 200 meters per 100 grams. The sample socks were created using Novita 7 veljestä, a yarn blend consisting of 75% wool and 25% nylon in colorway 085: heather, providing durability and warmth with the nylon content offering reinforcement for high-wear areas.
Needles and Notions: Knitters may choose between a set of five double-pointed needles (dpns) sized 3.5 mm (US 4) or a circular needle measuring at least 80 centimeters long for the magic loop technique. The pattern also requires stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction sections throughout the sock.
Pattern Details
As version 1.1 of the Bluebell Socks pattern, this design reflects the designer's personal inspiration drawn from Scottish wildflowers and folklore. The pattern includes comprehensive instructions for knitters seeking to create a finished pair of socks with proper shaping and structure. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic sock construction before beginning this project.
