Blue Ivy Knit Shawl by Kimberly Gintar
What is Being Made
Blue Ivy is a crescent-shaped shawl designed to be knit from the bottom up, creating a garment that gently rests on your shoulders. This intermediate-level knitting project is ideal for layering on cool spring days. The pattern offers three size options—small, medium, and large—allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions based on their preferred amount of lace detailing.
Construction and Design
The shawl begins with a lace section worked from the bottom, followed by stockinette stitch in the upper portion. The distinctive crescent form is achieved through strategic use of decreases and short rows, which shape the fabric to drape elegantly across the shoulders. The medium size, shown in the pattern documentation, demonstrates a two-color construction method: one yarn color for the lace foundation and a complementary color for the stockinette short row section, though single-color versions are equally suitable.
Finished Dimensions
After washing and blocking, the three sizes yield the following measurements:
- Small: 12 inches (31 cm) deep and 35.5 inches (90 cm) wide
- Medium: 18 inches (46 cm) deep and 58 inches (147 cm) wide
- Large: 22.5 inches (57 cm) deep and 77 inches (195 cm) wide
Stitches and Techniques Used
Blue Ivy employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern incorporates lace stitches in the lower section, which require attention to yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterning. The upper portion utilizes stockinette stitch, the most basic knit fabric structure. The shaping method relies on decreases to gradually reduce stitch count and short rows, an advanced shaping technique that creates the crescent silhouette without requiring bind-offs at intermediate points.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply weight, which creates a delicate, drapey fabric ideal for shoulder wraps. Yarn requirements vary by size:
- Small: Approximately 500 yards (460 meters)
- Medium (single color): Approximately 560 yards (520 meters)
- Medium (two colors): Approximately 440 yards (400 meters) for the lace section and 130 yards (120 meters) for the stockinette section
The pattern documentation references Wollmeise 100% Merino Superwash yarn in the colorway Kornblume for the small size, and Wollmeise Socken for the medium size options. These are premium fingering weight yarns composed of superwash merino, a fiber known for softness, elasticity, and easy care properties. Knitters may substitute any fingering weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber content.
Skill Level
Blue Ivy is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore lace patterning and shaping techniques such as short rows. The combination of lace work and strategic decreasing provides an engaging challenge without overwhelming newer knitters.
