Product Description
These little birdies are easy to knit and require only a little bit of sewing together. You could make these in any colours, how about black and white for a penguin, or brown and red for a robin? You can also make these without the rattle handle to make cute little birdie toys. You can add a squeaker or rattle inside the bird as you stuff it to make a musical bird. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the rattles are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). Please do ensure the eyes and beak are sewn on securely so that they cannot be pulled off and swallowed. For beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and a little seaming to finish.
Birdie Rattles Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
Birdie Rattles are small knitted bird toys designed to sit atop a knitted handle, creating charming rattle toys perfect for babies and young children. The pattern includes instructions for creating two distinct bird designs: a Pink and Purple bird rattle and a Yellow bird rattle with multiple color variations. These toys can be customized with squeakers or rattles inserted during the stuffing process to create musical elements, making them interactive playthings.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary construction method involves knitting the bird body in the round or flat, followed by seaming pieces together using a darning or tapestry needle. The pattern incorporates basic shaping through strategic decreases to form the bird's three-dimensional body. Stuffing techniques are essential, as toy filling is added during assembly to give the rattles their plump, dimensional shape. The design also incorporates embellishment techniques, including hand-stitching embroidery thread for facial features and attaching felt fabric and beads to create eyes and beaks.
Stitches Used
The Birdie Rattles pattern utilizes essential beginner-level knitting stitches. The primary stitch is the knit stitch, which forms the foundation of the bird body. Knit two together (k2tog) decreases are used to shape the bird's form and create the three-dimensional structure necessary for the toy. These basic stitches are combined to create simple, effective shaping that beginners can easily master while still achieving professional-looking results.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Birdie Rattles pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). Each rattle requires up to 25 grams of acrylic DK yarn. The Pink and Purple bird uses three yarn shades: Purple, Pink, and Yellow. The Yellow bird rattle utilizes four yarn shades: Yellow, Green, Purple, and Beige, allowing for creative color combinations and customization.
The pattern requires 4mm (US 6) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20 centimeters. Additional notions include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, several handfuls of toy filling to stuff each rattle, white and yellow felt fabric for embellishments, beads for eyes, and embroidery thread for stitching facial features and beaks. A tape measure or ruler is recommended for accurate measurements during construction.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to toy making or those just starting their knitting journey. The straightforward stitches, simple shaping techniques, and manageable project size allow beginners to build confidence while creating adorable finished pieces.
