Billy the Bat is just hanging out! This little bat has loops on their toes so you can hang them upside down to catch some z’s, or to make a Halloween decoration. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, this bat is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Billy the Bat is a charming knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry that features a small bat character with a playful hanging feature. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a stuffed toy bat complete with embroidered details and beaded eyes. The finished bat includes loops on the toes, allowing it to be hung upside down in the characteristic pose of a resting bat, making it an engaging decorative toy or gift.
This knitting pattern employs fundamental toy-making techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The project uses double knitting methods with single-pointed needles to construct the bat's body pieces. The pattern involves knitting individual components that are later seamed together using a darning or tapestry needle. The construction method allows for stuffing the toy with filling to create a three-dimensional plush form. Embroidery work is incorporated to add facial features, specifically for creating the bat's mouth using white yarn details.
While the full stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern notes section, the project utilizes standard knitting stitches common to toy patterns. The abbreviations noted include k for knit and foll for following, indicating a pattern that uses basic knit stitches as its foundation. The pattern is worked in double knitting weight (DK), also known as light worsted or 8 ply yarn, which provides an appropriate fabric density for a small stuffed toy.
Billy the Bat is constructed using 100% acrylic DK yarn, making it a durable and easy-care toy option. The pattern requires a minimum of 3.5mm (US 4) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm to 30cm, and calls for 30g each of black and grey yarn for the main body. An additional 2 metres of white DK yarn is needed for embroidering the mouth details. The original bat was photographed in Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn available in Black, Dark Grey Mix, and White shades, with this yarn or similar DK-weight acrylic recommended for best results.
Beyond yarn and needles, this project requires several finishing materials to complete Billy the Bat. Toy filling is needed in several large handfuls to stuff the completed knitted pieces. For the eyes, the pattern specifies two 1.5cm circles of white felt paired with two 5mm black beads to create expressive features. A sewing needle and thread are necessary for attaching the felt and beads securely to the finished toy.
