Billo Reversible Chevron Hat by Ambah O'Brien
What is Being Made
Billo is a reversible knit hat featuring subtle chevron stitch patterns. The design is offered in two adult sizes: M/L and L/XL, with circumferences of 22-24 inches (56-61cm) and 24-25 inches (61-64cm) respectively. The reversible construction makes this hat versatile and practical for everyday wear. For knitters seeking smaller sizes, the pattern provides guidance on scaling down needles, yarn weight, or both to achieve the desired gauge.
Techniques Used
This hat is worked primarily in the round using circular needles, which is a fundamental knitting technique ideal for creating seamless tubular garments. The pattern begins with a flat knit-and-purl ribbed section that is then joined in the round by knitting the final cast-on stitch together with the first stitch. This joining method eliminates the need for a seam while preventing twisting at the base of the hat. The reversible design showcases the versatility of basic stitch combinations, making it an excellent beginner-friendly project that teaches essential circular knitting skills.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch used throughout the hat construction
- Purl stitch (p): Combined with knit stitches to create textured patterns
- Ribbing (k1, p1): A one-knit, one-purl alternating pattern used for the initial 1.5-inch (4cm) ribbed cuff, which provides stretch and elasticity for a secure fit
- Chevron stitch: The subtle chevron pattern is created through the repetition of knit and purl stitches in a structured sequence across the body of the hat
Materials
Billo is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn (also called 10-ply), requiring approximately 140-160 yards (150-175 meters) depending on the size selected. The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes: smaller needles for the ribbed cuff section and larger needles for the main chevron pattern body. The worsted weight yarn choice makes this a quick knit, allowing crafters to complete the project efficiently while maintaining clear stitch definition. This yarn weight is forgiving for beginners and works up at a pace that keeps projects engaging and rewarding.
Difficulty Level
Billo is classified as a beginner-friendly pattern, making it an ideal introduction to in-the-round knitting and colorwork concepts. The simple combination of knit and purl stitches requires no advanced techniques, while the circular needle work teaches fundamental skills applicable to countless future projects. The straightforward construction and quick completion time make this pattern particularly encouraging for knitters new to the craft.
