Between Oceans Chunky Triangular Shawl by Laura Aylor
What Is Being Made
Between Oceans is a generous triangular shawl designed by Laura Aylor as a top-down knit project. The sample measures approximately 88 inches in wingspan and 39 inches in depth after blocking, making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering and warmth. The shawl features a luxurious fringe detail that adds movement and visual interest to the finished piece. This design is inspired by coastal aesthetics, offering a cozy garment perfect for wearing while walking along the ocean or enjoying outdoor settings.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This shawl is constructed using a top-down knitting method, which allows knitters to begin at the apex and expand outward to create the triangular shape. The pattern incorporates an easy lace pattern that creates openwork details throughout the shawl while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters. The design includes a generous fringe that is added after the main knitting is complete, requiring basic fringe-attachment skills using either a tapestry needle or crochet hook.
Stitches and Skills Required
The Between Oceans pattern focuses on fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to shawl construction. Essential skills include:
- Decreasing – used to shape the triangular silhouette
- Simple lace – creates the openwork pattern characteristic of the design
- Fringe attachment – the finishing technique that adds texture and movement to the edges
Yarn and Materials
The sample shawl requires approximately 815 yards of chunky-weight yarn. The original design was knit using Juniper Moon Farm Moonshine Chunky, a luxurious blend consisting of 40% alpaca, 40% wool, and 20% silk in a single-ply construction. This fiber composition provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen appropriate for a coastal-inspired accessory.
The pattern specifies US 10/6 mm needles for use with chunky-weight yarn, though appropriate needle sizing should be selected based on your chosen yarn and desired gauge. Additional materials needed include a tapestry needle or crochet hook for fringe attachment, a tape measure for measuring fringe lengths, and scissors for cutting fringe strands. A scale is recommended if you plan to resize the project or work at a different gauge than the sample.
Gauge and Customization
The sample shawl was blocked to a gauge of 12 stitches in 4 inches of stockinette stitch. Detailed swatching instructions are provided within the pattern to help you establish accurate gauge before beginning your project. The downloadable PDF includes comprehensive instructions for customizing the shawl in different yarn weights and sizes, making it adaptable to various fiber choices and personal preferences for wingspan and depth measurements.
Difficulty Level
This project is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction or lace knitting. The straightforward top-down construction, combined with simple lace techniques and basic decreasing, allows newer knitters to complete a sophisticated and wearable garment while building foundational skills.
