Product Description

Bestla boot toppers are a warm and playful addition to your favourite boots. The fair isle pattern adds a splash of colour to any outfit, and will keep your legs cozy even in the depth of winter.

The boot toppers can be made in a wide range of sizes to fit most calves. They work best in a yarn that has some stretch to it. The brown/pink sample is worked in 4 strands of 2/30NM Colourmart Merino (colours 039923, 98388, 13732, 14326 and 152345). The pink/green sample is worked in Jamieson & Smith 2ply wool (colours 43, 52, 65, 75 and 202).

Bestla is named after one of Saturn’s moons.

What is Being Made

Bestla Boot Toppers are knitted leg warmers designed to fit over boots, adding warmth and decorative flair to winter footwear. These boot cuffs are crafted to fit a range of calf circumferences, making them adaptable for different leg sizes. The toppers feature a colorful fair isle pattern that creates visual interest while providing practical insulation during cold weather.

Design and Sizing

The pattern offers four size options to accommodate various calf measurements: 125cm, 140cm, 155cm, and 170cm circumferences, with finished lengths ranging from 23cm to 31.5cm. The boot toppers are named after Bestla, one of Saturn's moons, reflecting the designer's creative naming approach. The fair isle technique creates a multi-colored pattern that works best in yarns with natural stretch properties.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Bestla Boot Toppers employ fair isle knitting, a traditional colorwork technique that involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows to create intricate patterned designs. This method allows knitters to integrate up to five different colors into a single piece while maintaining structural integrity. Fair isle patterns require careful tension management to ensure even fabric and prevent puckering or loose floats on the reverse side.

Stitches and Construction

The pattern utilizes fingering weight yarn worked on small-gauge needles to create a dense, elastic fabric suitable for boot toppers. Construction uses either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or short circular needles in sizes 2mm (US0) and 3mm (US2.5), allowing for seamless in-the-round knitting. The ribbed or fitted construction ensures the toppers stay securely in place around the calf without slipping.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Bestla Boot Toppers are designed for fingering weight yarn in five coordinating colors. The pattern provides two sample colorway options:

  • Brown and pink sample: worked in 4 strands of 2/30NM Colourmart Merino (colors 039923, 98388, 13732, 14326, and 152345)
  • Pink and green sample: worked in Jamieson & Smith 2ply wool (colors 43, 52, 65, 75, and 202)

Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 137 to 186 meters depending on the chosen calf circumference. The pattern recommends selecting yarns with natural elasticity to ensure the finished boot toppers maintain their shape and stay comfortably in place throughout wear.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Bestla Boot Toppers require knitters to be comfortable with fair isle colorwork techniques, managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, and working in the round. Prior experience with small-gauge knitting and color pattern reading is beneficial for successful completion of this project.
