Product Description
Are your fingers getting cold yet? This pattern is a collaboration that we came up with for a fun mitten swap! You knit two mittens, and mail one away to a friend...only to meet it's fraternal twin from that friend mailed back to you!
Embellish as you see fit- Melissa did a dandilion, I did Morse Code! (want to know what it says? It's a mystery... )
This is also a great free, simple, easy mitten pattern to fit most adults for those of you needing to bust out some Christmas presents! :)
Besties Mittens by Alicia Plummer & Melissa Schaschwary
What is Being Made
Besties is a downloadable knitting pattern for mittens available in multiple sizes. This intermediate-level project creates a pair of mittens using worsted weight yarn, with options for approximately 250 yards for smaller sizes or 500 yards for larger sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Besties mittens pattern employs several essential knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:
- Long tail cast-on method to establish the initial stitches on smaller diameter needles
- Ribbed cuff construction using a k1, p1 rib pattern worked to approximately 3 inches from the cast-on edge
- Thumb gusset shaping created through increases using m1r (make one right) and m1l (make one left) techniques to add volume for the thumb opening
- Circular knitting worked in the round using double-pointed needles or circular needles
- Stitch markers placed strategically to track pattern sections and beginning-of-round markers
- Embroidery finishing using scrap yarn for decorative details
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit stitches (k), purl stitches (p), and increase stitches (m1r and m1l). The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The cuff features a k1, p1 ribbed pattern that provides elasticity and a finished edge.
Gauge and Needles
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. Two needle sizes are required: US size 5 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles for the ribbed cuff, and US size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles for the main body of the mittens. This two-needle approach creates a tighter cuff that contrasts with the slightly looser main fabric.
Materials and Yarn Weight
Besties is designed for worsted weight yarn. The pattern accommodates various yarn options, with suggested yarns including Western Sky Knits Magnolia DK/MCN Superwash (250 yards in 3.99 ounces), Dia Worsted by Colour Adventures (100% merino; 218 yards per 3.53 ounces), and Malabrigo Rios 100% Superwash Merino (210 yards per 3.53 ounces). Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and place markers for tracking pattern sections.
Pattern Notes
This free downloadable pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate skills who are comfortable with circular knitting, increases, and stitch marker placement. The mitten construction progresses from the cuff through thumb gusset shaping, making it an excellent project for developing shaping techniques while creating a practical finished item.
