Berroco Wenham Seamless Lace Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Wenham is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 32½" to 64½" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 21" and 23½" down the center back. The sweater is shown in size 36½" and is designed with 2–4" of ease for a comfortable fit.

Construction Techniques

The Wenham sweater is constructed using several advanced knitting techniques that create visual interest and structural integrity:

  • Seamless construction: The sweater is worked seamlessly, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish.
  • Worked in the round: The body and sleeves are knitted circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which allows for continuous rounds of knitting without turning.
  • Lace patterning: Decorative lace stitches are incorporated throughout the design, adding elegant openwork details to the garment.
  • Stranded colorwork: The pattern employs stranded knitting techniques using three colors—Driftwood as the main color, with Cast Iron and Snow as contrasting colors—to create a multi-colored design.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Wenham uses stockinette stitch as the primary stitch base, with a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches when worked on the larger needles. Lace stitches are integrated into the design to create openwork sections, while the stranded colorwork sections require managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously to build the patterned areas.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Ultra Wool Fine, a 4-ply weight yarn. The main color, Driftwood (#53104), requires 4 to 7 balls depending on size. One ball each of Cast Iron (#5334) and Snow (#5300) are needed for the contrasting colorwork elements. Each ball of Berroco Ultra Wool Fine weighs 100 grams.

Needles and notions: Knitters will need two circular needles—one 16" and one 29"—in both size 3 (3.25 mm) and size 4 (3.75 mm). Additionally, one set of double-pointed needles in sizes 3 and 4 is required for working the smaller circumferences, such as the sleeve caps. A single stitch marker and waste yarn for holding sleeve stitches complete the notions list. Needle size should be adjusted as needed to obtain the specified gauge.
