Product Description

This is a slouchy beret, knitted in the round and worked in one piece from the bottom up. After casting on using a long tail tubular cast on method for 1x1 rib, the brim is worked before commencing onto a fairisle section to knit the rose motifs. This is then followed by the crown shaping of the beret and an I-cord finish.

Instructions for this beret are provided in both written and charted format.

What is Being Made

The Beloved Rose Beret is a knitted hat designed to fit an average-sized head with a finished diameter of approximately 10 inches (25.5 cm) when laid flat. This intermediate-level knitting project features a decorative rose motif inspired by the floral design work of Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, known for his iconic contributions to Glasgow's architectural heritage including The Glasgow School of Art, Mrs Cranston's Tea Rooms, Scotland Street School, and Queen's Cross Church.

Design Inspiration and Background

The rose pattern draws directly from Mackintosh's well-known floral-inspired decorative motifs, bringing a touch of early 20th-century Scottish design aesthetics to contemporary knitwear. The design was developed as part of The Glasgow School of Yarn knitwear design competition, reflecting the designer's connection to Glasgow's vibrant yarn and textile community.

Techniques and Stitches

This knitting project employs techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The construction utilizes both straight needles and circular needle work, allowing crafters to create the structured crown and brim of the beret while incorporating the featured rose motif throughout the design.
