Product Description

Alternating cables that incorporate a touch of lace add texture and dimension to the Bellejouanne Cowl. The cowl is worked from the bottom up and in-the-round. Bellejouanne Mitts and Tam pattterns are also available for purchase. Both written and charted instructions are included. Yarn: 140 - 190 yards (128 – 174 meters) Worsted weight if using wool or wool blends. DK weight if using alpaca or other animal fiber with less memory. Wool and wool blends will tend to have more memory and will spring back to shape. A luxury blend will have a softer drape and less memory, so a lighter weight is recommended.

Bellejouanne Cowl by Margaret Kendall

Project Overview

The Bellejouanne Cowl is an advanced knitting pattern designed by Margaret Kendall that showcases textured stitch work through alternating cables combined with delicate lace elements. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile cowl suitable for various fiber contents and yarn weights, offering knitters the flexibility to customize their finished piece based on desired drape and elasticity.

What Is Being Made

A cowl—a close-fitting neck accessory that combines the comfort of a scarf with the structure of a collar. The Bellejouanne Cowl features alternating cable and lace patterns that add visual interest and textural dimension to this essential layering piece.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern employs advanced knitting techniques centered on cable work and lace construction. The primary stitch elements include:

  • Alternating cables that form the structural foundation of the design
  • Lace stitches integrated throughout the cable sections to create openwork details and add visual lightness
  • Cable crossing techniques requiring careful stitch manipulation
  • Yarn-over and decrease combinations typical of lace knitting

The combination of these techniques creates a cowl with both textural depth and refined elegance, making it suitable for advanced knitters comfortable with multi-stitch pattern work.

Yarn and Materials

The Bellejouanne Cowl pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights and fiber blends, allowing knitters to choose based on desired characteristics:

  • DK weight yarns for a lighter, more delicate finished piece
  • Worsted weight yarns for a balanced, versatile cowl
  • Bulky and chunky weight yarns with pattern modifications for a denser, warmer accessory

Fiber content recommendations: The pattern suggests using wool or wool-blend yarns to achieve memory and elasticity in the finished cowl. Luxury fiber blends are recommended for those seeking enhanced softness and drape.

Yarn Weight Specifications and Yardage Requirements

The pattern has been tested and charted for multiple yarn options:

  • The Fibre Company Road to China Light (65% alpaca, 15% silk, 10% camel, 10% cashmere): 159 yards per 1.76 oz, Smoky Quartz colorway; requires 140 yards (128 m)
  • Patons Classic Wool Worsted (100% wool): 210 yards per 3.53 oz, Plum Heather colorway; requires 190 yards (174 m)
  • Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Chunky (80% acrylic, 20% wool): 153 yards per 4.94 oz, Mulberry colorway; requires 153 yards (140 m)
  • Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Solids (80% acrylic, 20% wool): 197 yards per 3.0 oz, Fishermen colorway; requires 135 yards (123.4 m)

Bulky weight options are available with pattern modifications noted in the instructions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is designated as advanced, making it ideal for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills in cable and lace techniques. The combination of alternating stitch patterns requires careful attention to stitch counts and pattern placement throughout the project.
