Product Description
The pattern/mini tutorial takes the crocheted motif to a whole new place. (Only the Bead Single Crochet is in the form of a written tutorial.) The “Granny” Square itself is modified giving it some dimension, and then literally, turning it on its side. Finally, a leg is added so that the squares can be turned into a scarf. Each motif is finished with silk and a bead single crochets. A Bead Single Crochet instruction is contained within the pattern.
The finished look is quite unique.
The scarf is made out of sock yarn with a crochet hook size G and finished with spooled silk (Beadsmith FFF), small cylinders (Deicas, Treasures of Aikos), which is crocheted with a size C hook. There are instructions contained within the pattern on how to do a bead single crochet.
The sample shown was created using Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock Yarn in the colorway, Mineshaft, however any light weight sock yarn will work for this pattern
Bead Crocheted Scarf: Not Your Granny's Granny Square Scarf
What Is Being Made
This is an elegant crocheted scarf that reimagines the classic granny square motif in an innovative way. Rather than using traditional granny squares in their standard orientation, this design turns the squares on their side and incorporates decorative beads into the edging, creating a sophisticated and unique wearable piece. The finished scarf measures approximately 62 inches in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling occasions.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level project requires knowledge of several crochet techniques beyond basic stitching. The pattern incorporates the following essential stitches and methods:
- Single Crochet (SC) – a fundamental stitch used throughout the construction
- Double Crochet (DC) – employed in the granny square structure and pattern details
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) – adds textural dimension and visual interest to the design
- Crab Stitch – also known as Reverse Single Crochet or Lobster Stitch, this technique creates a decorative finished edge with a distinctive braided appearance
- Bead Single Crochet – a specialized technique where beads are locked into place as you complete each single crochet stitch, creating an integrated beaded embellishment along the scarf's edging
The bead single crochet technique works by beginning a standard crochet stitch and, when two loops remain on the hook, pulling a bead up through the stitch before completing it. This method securely locks each bead into place as part of the fabric structure.
Materials Required
The scarf is constructed using lightweight yarns and embellishment materials. You will need approximately 400 to 450 yards of light weight variegated sock yarn for a 62-inch scarf. If you prefer a longer finished length, additional yardage will be necessary. The pattern also calls for 4 spools of Gudebrod silk in four coordinating colors to provide color variation and visual richness to the design.
Yarn Weight and Skill Level
This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, which are ideal for creating the delicate, refined appearance of the finished scarf. The project is rated at an intermediate difficulty level, assuming you already possess basic crochet knowledge and familiarity with bead single crochet techniques. This makes it an excellent choice for crocheters looking to expand their skills with decorative beading methods and more complex stitch combinations.
