Paired yarnovers and slanted decreases make the lines wave back and forth to make the most of variegated yarn. You can always check yourself on this easy to memorize pattern by making sure the purl columns line up! Pay attention when you get to the heel flap to make sure you are working the correct version of the beachcomber lace. Beachcomber Socks by Corrina Ferguson

What Is Being Made

The Beachcomber Socks are a pair of knitted socks featuring a distinctive wave pattern that runs vertically up and down the leg. Designed by Corrina Ferguson for picnicknits.com, these socks showcase lazy wave motifs created through strategic yarn manipulation and decreases. The design is inspired by beach-themed aesthetics and works beautifully with variegated yarn, particularly yarn dyed by Sugarbee Studios, which enhances the visual movement of the wave pattern throughout the sock.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its signature appearance. The primary method involves combining yarnovers and slanted decreases to create the wave lines that travel across the sock fabric. The pattern uses knitting in the round, which is the standard construction method for socks, ensuring seamless fabric and proper fit. A traditional heel flap is incorporated into the construction, requiring careful attention to stitch alignment to maintain the integrity of the wave pattern. The use of variegated yarn adds complexity and visual interest, as the color variations interact with the stitch pattern to create depth and movement.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The Beachcomber Socks pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a strategic sequence:

  • Knit (k) – The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl (p) – Purl stitches create textural contrast and help define the wave pattern
  • Yarn Over (yo) – Creates deliberate holes and increases that form part of the wave design
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease that shapes the wave lines
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk) – A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches knitwise one at a time to the right needle, then inserting the left needle through the front of both stitches and knitting them together

The pattern emphasizes the importance of maintaining alignment, particularly ensuring that purl columns line up correctly to preserve the visual wave effect. This attention to stitch placement is especially critical when working the heel flap section.

Materials and Gauge

The Beachcomber Socks are designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, making them suitable for a range of sock yarns. The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 30 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when knitting in the round. This gauge information is essential for achieving the correct sock dimensions and ensuring proper fit. The pattern is available in two sizes: small/medium (S/M) and medium/large (M/L), with stitch counts adjusted accordingly for each size. The pattern notes are presented with S/M specifications listed first, followed by M/L specifications in parentheses for easy reference.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Beachcomber Socks require knitters to have solid foundational skills including comfort with knitting in the round, executing both right-leaning and left-leaning decreases, and working with yarnovers. The pattern's intermediate classification reflects the need to carefully track stitch placement and pattern alignment, particularly through the heel flap construction, rather than requiring advanced techniques.
