Product Description
Crocheted using simple popcorn stitches in a soft and pretty yarn, the Beach Pebbles Hat is beautiful. It was a joy to crochet.
The pattern itself is simple to crochet and you will be able to relax and watch Netflix while you work on it :)
You can easily make the slouch hat less slouchy by working fewer repeat rounds mid hat :) My sisters both like slouchy hats though so they can fit their messy buns inside them during the winter months.
Beach Pebbles Hat by Rhondda
What Is Being Made
The Beach Pebbles Hat is an adult-sized crochet hat designed by Rhondda Mol of Oombawka Design, Ltd. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat with a head circumference of approximately 23 inches (fitting Adult Medium) and a height of approximately 12.5 inches. The hat features a textured surface created through popcorn stitch detailing, giving it visual depth and a distinctive pebbled appearance.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet project utilizes several fundamental techniques to achieve its textured design. The primary stitch structure combines popcorn stitches with half double crochet (hdc) stitches in alternating sets, creating the characteristic bumpy, pebbled texture that gives the hat its name. The pattern requires working in the round to construct the crown and body of the hat, a standard technique for hat construction in crochet.
The gauge for this project is approximately 4 sets of popcorn stitches and half double crochet stitches, which helps determine the final dimensions and drape of the finished garment. Popcorn stitches are a popular decorative stitch that creates raised, dimensional clusters on the fabric surface, making them ideal for adding visual interest and texture to wearable items.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Beach Pebbles Hat pattern calls for Red Heart Hopscotch Yarn in the colorway Somersault, requiring 2 balls total. This yarn is 100% acrylic, with each ball containing 4 ounces (113 grams) and 210 yards (193 meters) of yardage. Red Heart Hopscotch is classified as [4] Medium Weight Yarn, also known as aran weight, making it a substantial yarn choice that works up quickly and creates a warm, durable finished hat.
The acrylic fiber content makes this hat practical and easy-care—the finished project can be machine washed on a warm, gentle cycle and tumble dried on low heat, ideal for a frequently-worn accessory.
Tools Required
- Crochet Hooks: 5 mm (H) and 5.5 mm (I) Susan Bates hooks. The pattern uses two hook sizes, likely for different sections or to achieve proper gauge.
- Additional Supplies: Scissors, yarn needle (for weaving in ends), and an optional stitch marker for tracking rounds
Skill Level and Project Scope
Designated as an intermediate-level project, the Beach Pebbles Hat is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills in basic stitches and working in the round. The combination of popcorn stitches and half double crochet requires comfort with stitch techniques beyond single and double crochet, making it an excellent project for developing texture work and stitch variation skills.
