Product Description
This pattern knits up quickly with tape yarn and large needles so you’ll be ready to take this bag with you in no time! The original prototype made it through two full days of the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, a major garage sale haul, a trip to the farmer’s market, AND a day at the beach. It was stretchy and comfy and held a ton, and didn’t drag down to my knees when it was full, so I knew it was a keeper.
A basic understanding of knitting, knitting two stitches together, drop stitches and weaving a seam is necessary.
There is also an option to make a larger size.
Beach Front Bag by Barley and Flax
Project Overview
The Beach Front Bag is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Barley and Flax. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a practical and stylish tote bag perfect for beach trips, farmers market visits, and everyday use. The bag is constructed using super bulky yarn, making it a quick project that knits up rapidly for immediate use.
What is Being Made
This pattern produces a spacious tote bag with a relaxed, draped aesthetic. The finished bag is designed to be lightweight and comfortable to carry when full, without straining the shoulder. The open, airy construction makes it ideal for summer outings and casual occasions where a breathable bag is desired.
Construction Technique
The Beach Front Bag is worked in the round from the top down, a construction method that creates a seamless body. The handle is added as a separate component after the main bag is completed. This top-down approach allows for easy customization of bag depth and provides a professional finish.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch creating the base fabric
- Purl (P): Used to create textural variation in the pattern
- Yarn Over (YO): Creates decorative eyelets and contributes to the open, airy appearance
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping
Materials and Tools
Needles: Size 17 circular needles in 16" length, essential for working the bag in the round.
Yarn: Super bulky weight yarn is the primary requirement. The pattern calls for 1 skein of Hoooked RibbonXL (131 yards / 120 meters). Alternate yarn options include Wool and the Gang Mixtape or We Are Knitters The Tape, both compatible super bulky alternatives.
Additional Supplies: A wool needle for finishing, and a stitch marker to track rounds during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches and rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch. This gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions and drape of the bag. The finished bag measures 17 inches in width, providing ample space for carrying items.
Finishing and Blocking
Blocking is vital to achieving the desired aesthetic of the Beach Front Bag. Wet stretching is the recommended blocking method, which opens up the stitches and creates the characteristic loose, draped look that defines this design. This blocking technique enhances the bag's visual appeal and contributes to its relaxed, summery appearance.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills. The combination of basic stitches, circular needle work, and straightforward construction makes it accessible to experienced beginners while remaining engaging for intermediate knitters.
