Beach Day Ruana by Michelle Ferguson
What is Being Made
The Beach Day Ruana is an elegant open-front cardigan-style garment designed by Michelle Ferguson. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a sophisticated ruana—a draped, cape-like wrap that offers versatility for layering. The finished garment measures approximately 54 inches in length before blocking, with blocking adding up to an additional 10 inches of length plus slight width expansion. Available in three size ranges: XS/S (28-34" bust), M/L (36-42" bust), and XL/2X (44-50" bust).
Construction Technique
The Beach Day Ruana is constructed using a two-panel method. Each panel is worked lengthwise independently, then the completed panels are sewn together to create the finished garment. This modular approach allows for straightforward assembly and makes the project more manageable. The pattern is designed in multiples of 8+3 rows, enabling customization of garment length by adding or subtracting complete pattern repeats as needed.
Blocking and Finishing
Blocking is highly recommended for this project, as it significantly enhances the final appearance and drape of the ruana. The blocking process will add both substantial length (up to 10 inches) and a modest amount of width to the completed panels, creating the desired finished dimensions and improving the overall aesthetic of the garment.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc) – A fundamental stitch providing structure and density
- Double Crochet (dc) – Used to create lighter, more open sections
- Chain (ch) – Foundation and connecting stitch throughout the pattern
Materials Required
Yarn: Sport weight (#2) yarn totaling 1400-1500 yards depending on size. The sample was created using Premier Yarns Cotton Fair, a breathable cotton option ideal for a beach-appropriate garment.
Tools and Notions:
- G (4.0mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming panels
- Scissors for cutting yarn
- Measuring tape for checking gauge and length
- Stitch markers (optional, but helpful for tracking pattern repeats)
Skill Level and Gauge
This project is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-panel construction and blocking techniques. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions, and a gauge pattern is provided on page 2 of the pattern for reference before beginning.
Design Details
The Beach Day Ruana combines practical construction with elegant draping, making it an ideal layering piece for warm-weather wear. The use of sport-weight yarn in cotton provides breathability and a refined appearance, while the open-front ruana silhouette offers styling flexibility. The pattern's modular design and clear construction method make it accessible to intermediate crocheters seeking a polished, wearable finished piece.
