Description
Be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons with this easy but intricate-looking sweater! Sweater is worked from top down; you cast-on and start working flat to shape front neck drop, while at the same time you work your raglan increases. Then you join in the round and keep knitting the yoke. When the yoke is done, sleeve sts are placed on hold on waste yarn and the body is completed. Then you knit your sleeves…and you’re done!

Be a Flamingo Cropped Sweater by Skips a Generation
Project Overview
Be a Flamingo is an intermediate-level cropped sweater designed by Antonia Cavaliere of Skips a Generation. This downloadable knitting pattern offers eight size options ranging from extra-small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 78 cm (30¾") to 120 cm (47¼"). The sweater features a modern cropped silhouette with finished lengths between 40 and 46.3 cm (15¾" to 18¼"), making it a versatile layering piece. The design is shown in size S/M with 0.6 cm (¼") positive ease allowance for a comfortable, contemporary fit.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a women's cropped sweater with three-quarter length sleeves. The garment is constructed with a fitted silhouette designed to sit above the natural waistline. The sweater accommodates multiple sizing options to ensure proper fit across a wide range of body types, with graduated measurements that scale proportionally from the smallest to largest sizes.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Be a Flamingo sweater employs a combination of flat and circular knitting techniques to create its structure. The pattern requires knitters to work both flat sections and in-the-round sections, demonstrating intermediate-level construction skills. Key techniques include:
- Casting on to establish the foundation stitches
- Working knit and purl stitches to create the fabric texture
- Executing increases and decreases to shape the garment body and sleeves
- Working in the round using circular needles for seamless sections
- Working flat for sections that require traditional back-and-forth knitting
- Picking up stitches to attach sleeves or create neckline finishes
- Binding off to secure and finish the edges
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The primary stitches include knit and purl stitches, which form the basic fabric structure. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked throughout the pattern. The combination of these essential stitches creates a classic sweater construction suitable for a sport weight yarn.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Be a Flamingo sweater is designed to be knitted with MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton in sport weight yarn (CYCA 2 classification). This yarn is 100% cotton, offering breathability and a smooth finish ideal for a cropped sweater design. The yardage per ball is 165 meters or 180 yards per 50 grams (1.8 oz). Depending on the size being knitted, the pattern requires between 4 and 6 balls of yarn. The pattern is shown in colorway #341 Flamingo, a vibrant shade that gives the design its distinctive name.
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles in multiple configurations to accommodate the different construction techniques. Knitters will need a 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle and a 32-inch (80 cm) circular needle for working larger sections in the round. Additionally, a set of four to five double-pointed needles or a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle is required for working the three-quarter length sleeves and smaller circumference sections. The specific needle size should be verified against the pattern's gauge requirements to ensure proper finished measurements.
Skill Level and Pattern Difficulty
Classified as an intermediate-level pattern, Be a Flamingo requires knitters to have foundational skills and comfort with multiple construction techniques. This pattern is well-suited for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to expand their technical repertoire by combining flat and circular knitting methods in a single garment.
