Product Description

The Basket of Easter Eggs Tea Cosy is the kind of Easter present you can make to give without the callorie content of Chocolate eggs.

The Easter basket has five painted eggs inside, with assorted designs and colours. And there are four dark purple crocus flowers in and around the basket too.

For the knitter there are lots of interesting elements in this project. There are mock cables around the bottom edge and rim of the basket. The basket itself is actually woven knitting. Then the grassy lining in the basket is knitted in loopy stitch. The eggs have color change, intarsia and applique work on them, but you could knit plain eggs or use colour changing yarn to give your eggs stripes without the hassle of changing yarns.

The 7 page knitting pattern contains lots of photos to help and guide you.

The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting it very soon!

Basket of Easter Eggs Tea Cosy

What is Being Made

The Basket of Easter Eggs Tea Cosy is a knitted covering designed to fit a 2 pint teapot or teapots that hold 6 to 8 cups. This decorative and functional accessory features a charming Easter-themed design with a basket motif and colorful Easter eggs, making it both a practical kitchen item and a festive seasonal decoration.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern employs traditional two-needle knitting techniques throughout the construction. The design incorporates various knitting manipulations, including techniques where stitches are worked into the front of loops and passed over one another to create textured details and shaping elements essential to the basket and egg design.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and abbreviations including:

  • Stitch (st/sts) – The basic unit of knitted fabric
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and creating seamless transitions
  • Pass Slip Stitch Over (psso) – A decrease technique that creates shaping and texture
  • Purl stitches – Worked into the front of stitches to create dimensional effects and pattern variations
  • Repeat (rep) – Pattern sequences that are worked multiple times to build the overall design

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This tea cosy is worked in DK weight yarn, specifically using Stylecraft Special DK in multiple colors to create the Easter egg basket design. The yarn quantities are as follows:

  • 73g in Mustard (primary color for the basket)
  • 15g in Grass Green
  • 15g in Violet
  • 3g in Citron
  • Oddments of Stylecraft Special DK in various colors for individual eggs (approximately 2g per egg)
  • Stuffing for padding and shaping the three-dimensional egg elements

The pattern requires two different needle sizes to achieve the appropriate fabric tension:

  • 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9) – Used for the main fabric, achieving a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 10x10cm
  • 4.00mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) – Used with double thickness DK yarn for specific sections, achieving a tension of 14 stitches and 23 rows over 10x10cm

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and be comfortable following pattern instructions that include stitch abbreviations, tension requirements, and techniques such as slip stitch decreases and purl manipulations. The multi-color work and shaping elements require moderate experience.

Design and Format

The Basket of Easter Eggs Tea Cosy pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF by designer TeaCosyFolk, an independent designer specializing in tea cosy patterns. This format allows crafters to print the pattern and reference it easily while working on their project.
