Product Description
No additional buttons, ribbon or lace needed for this one, just yarn, and needles. The pattern includes the instructions to make the hooded tracksuit top, shorts and trainers. Sizes for a 0-3 month old baby or a 16-22” Reborn doll. Knitted from the top-down, I don’t use or really like circular needles so with this and all my designs it is made using single-pointed standard needles. The pattern has line by line instructions, making it easy to follow.
Basil Baby Tracksuit Set by Caroline Richards
What is Being Made
The Basil tracksuit set is a coordinated three-piece knitted outfit designed for reborn dolls measuring 16–22 inches or for babies aged 0–3 months. The set comprises a sweater, shorts, and leggings, creating a complete matching ensemble in contrasting colorways. This downloadable PDF pattern allows crafters to customize the pieces for different doll and baby sizes.
Garment Components
- Sweater: A knitted pullover top that forms the primary layer of the tracksuit
- Shorts: Fitted shorts with elastic casing for secure wear on dolls or infants
- Leggings: Coordinating leg wear to complete the tracksuit aesthetic
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and decorative techniques. I-cord is used as a finishing detail, created using the double-pointed needle method where three cast-on stitches are repeatedly knitted and slid along the needle shaft, with yarn pulled tightly across the back of the work to form a tubular cord. This technique is commonly applied for edgings, ties, or decorative accents on baby garments.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch (st st): The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, uniform surface
- Garter Stitch (G-st): A textured stitch formed by knitting every row, often used for ribbing, borders, or elastic cuffs
- Slip Stitch (sl1): Used for seaming, edge definition, or pattern transitions
- Yarn Forward (yfwd): A technique for creating decorative eyelet holes or lace effects
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern accommodates three size ranges with specific material requirements. For the largest 21–22 inch doll or 0–3 month baby, crafters will need 150 grams of double knit wool in the main color and 50 grams in a contrast color, worked on 3.25mm needles (smaller) and 4mm needles (larger). The mid-range 19–20 inch doll or newborn size requires 150 grams of double knit wool in the main color and 50 grams in contrast, using 3mm and 3.75mm needles. For the smallest 16–18 inch doll or small newborn, 100 grams of 4-ply wool in the main color and 30 grams in contrast are used with 2.75mm and 3.25mm needles.
Double knit and 4-ply wools are chosen for their durability and smooth finish, ideal for baby garments and doll clothing. A small length of elastic is required for the shorts waistband to ensure a secure, comfortable fit. The pattern uses both standard and double-pointed needles to accommodate different construction methods, including the i-cord technique.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques including casting on, knit and purl stitches, and binding off. The inclusion of i-cord construction and the need to manage multiple yarn colors and needle sizes makes it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginner level.
