Materials Required

• Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Happy Feet — 2 hanks (ladies medium) or 3 hanks (men's medium) of the 50g size. The sample shown uses color 11. Happy Feet is a sock-weight yarn well suited to close-fitting, durable knitted socks.
• Needles: One set of US size 2 double pointed needles (DPNs), or the size needed to achieve the stated gauge. Double pointed needles are the traditional tool for knitting small circumferences in the round such as socks, allowing the work to be divided across multiple needle tips.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches over 4 inches worked in stockinette stitch on a US size 2 needle. Achieving correct gauge is especially important in sock knitting, where fit is critical and the fabric must be firm enough to withstand wear.

Techniques Used

• Casting on and joining in the round: Stitches are cast onto a single needle and then divided across three double pointed needles before joining to work in the round, taking care not to twist the cast-on edge.
• Knitting in the round: The majority of the sock — the cuff, leg, and foot — is worked in the round on double pointed needles, producing a seamless tube of fabric.
• Ribbing: A K2, P2 (knit two, purl two) rib is worked for 6 inches to form the cuff. This stretchy stitch pattern ensures the sock stays up on the leg and accommodates a range of calf sizes.
• Heel flap construction: The heel is worked back and forth in rows on half the total stitch count — 32 stitches for ladies, 36 for men's — while the remaining stitches rest on the other two needles. This is the classic heel flap method, which creates a double-layered, reinforced heel that is both durable and comfortable.
• Slipped stitch heel pattern: The heel flap is worked using a two-row repeat: one right-side row of alternating slip-one and knit-one stitches, and one wrong-side row beginning with a slip stitch followed by purling across. This slip-stitch technique creates a dense, chain-selvedge edge that reinforces the heel and makes it easier to pick up stitches later for the gusset.
• Slipping stitches purlwise: The pattern includes an important technique note — all slipped stitches are slipped as if to purl (purlwise) unless otherwise specified, which keeps the stitch mount correct and the fabric smooth. The sole exception noted is the SSK (slip, slip, knit) decrease.
• SSK decrease: The SSK is a left-leaning decrease used in sock knitting, particularly during gusset shaping, to reduce stitches symmetrically on either side of the foot.
