Product Description
So many fingerless mitts just have a slit for the thumb opening. This mitt shows you how to make a gusset (an enlarged area) for the thumb opening so that the mitt has a more tailored fit. Size Small can be made from the Women's Mitt pattern by using 28 FSC instead of 30.
Basic Fingerless Mitts with Thumb Gusset
What Is Being Made
These are fingerless mitts designed by Anna Murphy, featuring a thumb gusset for improved fit and comfort. The pattern includes sizing for both Men's (Adult XL) and Women's (Adult M-L), making them versatile for different hand sizes. Fingerless mitts are practical accessories that keep the wrists and palm area warm while leaving fingers free for dexterity and tactile tasks.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly crochet project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern uses foundation single crochet (FSC) to create the initial base, which provides a more flexible and professional-looking foundation edge compared to traditional chain foundations. The mitts are worked in the round, a core crochet technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for wearables. The pattern includes joining rounds with slip stitches to create clean transitions between rounds. Post stitches are incorporated to add texture and visual interest to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) – creates the initial foundation
- Single Crochet (sc) – basic stitch for structure
- Double Crochet (dc) – primary stitch for the main fabric
- Slip Stitch (ss) – used for joining rounds
- Chain (ch) – creates turning chains and increases
- Front-Post Double Crochet (fpdc) – adds textured ribbing
- Back-Post Double Crochet (bpdc) – works in conjunction with fpdc for ribbed effect
Materials and Tools
This project requires worsted weight yarn, with approximately 2.5–3 ounces needed to complete both mitts. The pattern suggests Vanna's Choice as a suitable yarn option. Crochet hooks in sizes H and G are used depending on the desired gauge and sizing. Additional tools include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, a tape measure for checking sizing, stitch markers to track your place in the round, and optionally a row counter to keep track of completed rounds. The gauge is specified as 4 inches equaling 14 double crochets when worked with an H hook, which helps ensure proper fit across different sizes.
