Basic Beanies by Lullaby Lodge

What is Being Made

Basic Beanies is a downloadable crochet pattern collection designed by Lullaby Lodge that offers a versatile foundation for creating fitted hats across multiple sizes. The pattern provides a range of sizing options from newborn through adult large, making it suitable for gifting or creating a wardrobe of hats for different family members. The design is intentionally simple, serving as what the designer describes as "a blanket canvas to adapt and embellish," allowing crafters to customize and personalize their finished beanies with additional embellishments or color variations.

Sizes and Fit

This pattern accommodates nine different size categories:

  • Newborn: 12 inches (31 cm) circumference, 5 inches (13 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • 3 months: 14 inches (36 cm) circumference, 5½ inches (14 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • 6 months: 15 inches (38 cm) circumference, 6 inches (15 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • 12 months: 16 inches (41 cm) circumference, 6½ inches (17 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • Toddler: 18 inches (46 cm) circumference, 7½ inches (19 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • Child: 19 inches (49 cm) circumference, 8 inches (20 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • Teen: 20 inches (51 cm) circumference, 9 inches (23 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • Adult: 21 inches (54 cm) circumference, 10 inches (25 cm) crown to bottom of ear
  • Adult Large: 22 inches (56 cm) circumference, 11 inches (28 cm) crown to bottom of ear

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Basic Beanies pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginner to intermediate crafters. The hat is worked in rounds starting from the crown, a common method for creating fitted headwear that allows for gradual shaping and even distribution of stitches. This top-down construction approach makes it easier to achieve proper fit and sizing.

The pattern includes optional ribbing that may be added and is worked sideways, then joined onto the main body of the hat. This ribbing technique adds stretch and structure to the finished beanie, helping it maintain its shape and providing a comfortable fit around the head and ears.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:

  • Single crochet (sc) – Listed as double crochet in UK terminology, this is a fundamental short stitch
  • Double crochet (dc) – Listed as treble crochet in UK terminology, a taller stitch that works up more quickly
  • Chain (ch) – The foundational stitch used to create loops and structure
  • Back loop (bl) – Working through only the back loop of a stitch creates textural variation and is often used for ribbing or creating defined edges

Materials and Tools

The Basic Beanies pattern requires minimal materials, making it an economical project choice. Each size requires less than 100 grams of Aran or worsted weight yarn, meaning a single skein can often complete multiple hats depending on the size selected. The pattern calls for two crochet hook sizes: 5mm and 4.5mm hooks, allowing crafters to adjust tension and create different fabric densities if desired. Additional tools include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the completed hat.

Gauge and Difficulty

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches to 10 centimeters (4 inches) and 7 rows when working with the recommended yarn weight and hook size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished hat fits correctly across the range of sizes provided. The pattern is rated as beginner to intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to newer crocheters while remaining interesting for those with some experience. The straightforward construction and use of basic stitches make this an ideal project for building foundational crochet skills.
