BARONESSA MERINO Woollen Jumper
What is Being Made
The Baronessa Merino is a knitted woollen jumper designed by domoras.com, available in five sizes ranging from small (size 8) to xxlarge (size 22). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted pullover sweater with bust measurements from 86 cm to 131 cm and lengths from 61 cm to 70 cm, with the option to customize the finished length above the welt. The design features a classic construction with a welted body, collar detail, and coordinating sleeve welts.
Techniques and Construction
This knitting project employs a multi-colour construction technique, incorporating three distinct yarn colours throughout the design. The jumper is built using a colour-work approach where the welt of the body and collar are worked in colour A, the main body is knitted in colour B, and the sleeve welts are finished in colour C. The design allows for flexibility in execution—a plain single-colour version is also possible, requiring slightly less yarn (50 g reduction). The garment can be customized in length by adjusting the sections above the welt, making it adaptable to individual preferences and proportions.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the construction involves welted sections at the body hem, sleeve cuffs, and neckline. These welts create structured, finished edges typical of traditional jumper construction. The main body sections are worked in what appears to be stockinette or similar foundational stitches appropriate for 4-ply yarn weight, allowing the colour work and garment shaping to be the focal points of the design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Baronessa Merino is designed for 4-ply weight yarn. The original garment shown in the pattern photographs was knitted using Baby merino wool (100% merino) from Campolmi Roberto Filati, based in Firenze (Florence), Italy. Yarn requirements vary by size: small requires 300 g total (100 g colour A, 150 g colour B, 50 g colour C); medium requires 350 g (100 g colour A, 200 g colour B, 50 g colour C); large requires 450 g (100 g colour A, 250 g colour B, 100 g colour C); xlarge requires 600 g (150 g colour A, 350 g colour B, 100 g colour C); and xxlarge requires 650 g (150 g colour A, 400 g colour B, 100 g colour C). With a yardage of 210 meters per 50 g, this allows approximately 1,260 to 2,730 meters of yarn depending on size.
Alternative Yarn Options
The pattern provides several alternative yarn suggestions suitable for substitution, all in 4-ply weight:
- ROWAN Fine Tweed
- PATONS Merino Extrafine 4-ply
- LANG YARNS Merino 200 Bebe
- Malabrigo Sock
- Cascade 220 Fingering
- MONDIAL
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, the Baronessa Merino is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colour work and garment shaping. The multi-colour construction and need to manage three different yarn colours simultaneously makes this project more complex than basic single-colour jumpers, though the welted construction and adjustable length provide manageable elements for intermediate crafters.
