Barbecue Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This is a crochet applique pattern for a barbecue design, created by independent designer Kerri's Crochet. The finished piece is a dimensional crochet applique that can be stitched onto garments, blankets, or other projects. The pattern includes multiple components that are crocheted separately and then assembled together using sewing thread and a needle to create a complete barbecue motif.
Project Specifications and Sizing
The Barbecue pattern is available in two size options depending on the yarn weight used:
- Large size: 17.5cm x 11cm (7" x 4.5") when worked with 8 ply wool
- Medium size: 12cm x 8cm (4.75" x 3") when worked with 4 ply crochet cotton
Difficulty Level and Craft Technique
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic skills. The project uses fundamental crochet techniques including shaping through increases and decreases, working in rows, and assembling multiple crocheted pieces into a finished applique.
Crochet Stitches Used
The Barbecue pattern employs a variety of essential crochet stitches to create different textures and shapes within the design:
- Chain stitch (ch) - used to create foundation chains and turning chains
- Double crochet (dc) - the primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building structure and density
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining rounds and connecting pieces
- Half treble crochet (htr) - a taller stitch that adds variation in height
- Treble crochet (tr) - provides additional height and drape to certain sections
- Double treble crochet (dtr) - the tallest stitch in the pattern, used for specific design elements
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended results:
- Yarn: 6 colours of 4 ply crochet cotton or wool. The designer used 4 ply crochet cotton for the medium size, while 8 ply wool is recommended for the larger version. The multiple colours allow for realistic barbecue detailing such as the grill body, grates, handles, and decorative elements.
- Crochet hook: 1.25mm hook is specified for use with 4 ply crochet cotton
- Finishing tools: Scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and a sewing needle with sewing thread for assembling the separate crocheted components together
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized by component sections, beginning with the Bottom Barbecue Section. This modular approach allows crocheters to work each part of the barbecue separately before assembly. The pattern uses row-by-row construction with stitch counts provided for accuracy, and includes increases at the beginning and end of rows to create shaped pieces that form the three-dimensional barbecue structure.
Additional Resources
The designer provides supplementary learning materials to support crocheters working through this pattern. A video tutorial is available on the designer's YouTube channel titled Barbecue Crochet Applique Tutorial, which can help visual learners understand the construction techniques and assembly process.
