Product Description

A hat and a matching small (swatch) bag feature Estonian techniques which are described with diagrams in the pattern. These techniques are also described in Folk Knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush: the vikkel braid, a nupp, a three-color twist, and the Kihnu Troi cast-on. Each also has a stranded design from the book Latvian Dreams by Joyce Williams et al..

You can use three or four colors, or even more. The hat uses 100 g of the main color, less than 50 g of the other colors. The bag uses less than 50 g each of two or three colors.

The hat has an option for a rounded top and for a pointy top with a tassel. The bottom of the hat can be lined or allowed to roll. All patterns are charted.

For the hat sizes, I have made all with casting on 112 st, getting a hat that's about 21 inches around. A smaller or larger hat can be made by adjusting the gauge or stitch count accordingly.

Baltic Hat and Bag by Kate Hedstrom

Overview

This downloadable PDF pattern by designer Kate Hedstrom presents two coordinating knitted accessories inspired by traditional Baltic textile arts: a structured bag and a matching hat. Both projects employ advanced colorwork and traditional Estonian and Latvian knitting techniques, making them suitable for experienced knitters seeking authentic folk-inspired designs.

Baltic Bag

What is Being Made: A small knitted bag constructed in the round using traditional Baltic colorwork methods. The bag is worked from the bottom up in a cylindrical construction, featuring a charted pattern with multiple colors and traditional stitch embellishments.

Techniques Used: The Baltic Bag employs several advanced traditional techniques drawn from Estonian and Latvian knitting heritage. The pattern begins with a Kihnu Troi cast-on, an authentic Estonian cast-on method that creates a distinctive edge suitable for traditional folk designs. The bag is constructed in the round using either magic loop or double-pointed needles. The design incorporates three-color twist colorwork, a technique that creates intricate patterned effects by twisting multiple yarn colors together. The pattern also features vikkel braid, a traditional Scandinavian technique that creates braided or twisted effects within the knitted fabric.

Stitches Used: The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including plain knitting (stockinette stitch) for the base fabric and background sections. Nupps are featured as decorative elements worked in the main color, creating small bobble-like textures that add dimensional interest to the design. These traditional stitches are organized according to a charted pattern that repeats across the width of the bag.

Materials: The Baltic Bag requires three colors of worsted weight yarn, with less than 50 grams of each color needed. The pattern is shown worked in Cascade 220 yarn in the following colors: 8010 (natural) as the main color, 4010 (straw) as a contrast color, and 2452 (pickle) as a second contrast color. The pattern is worked on needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn in the round, either double-pointed needles or circular needles used with the magic loop method.

Pattern References and Inspiration

The Baltic Hat and Bag pattern draws from authoritative sources on traditional Baltic knitting. Kate Hedstrom references Folk Knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush (Interweave Press, 2000) and Latvian Dreams: Knitting Patterns from Weaving Charts by Joyce Williams, Lizbeth Upitis, and Alvis Upitis (Schoolhouse Press, 2000), ensuring the techniques and design elements reflect authentic traditional practices from the Baltic region.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, requiring solid experience with colorwork, chart reading, and traditional knitting techniques. Knitters should be comfortable working in the round and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously before beginning this project.
