Product Description
This hat had directions for two weights fingering and worsted. The fingering hat is sized for a Medium and a Large. The worsted only comes in Large. If you are comfortable playing around with gauge and the number of repeats, it is possible to come up with a wide variety of sizes.
Let me just start by saying that, I love hockey. In fact, "love" may be understating it a bit. So, when I decided to design this hat, I wanted it to be an ode to the backup goalie by choosing hockey team colors (in this case the Kings/gray, Sabres/blue). When I was a kid, I would see the backup sitting there, often in a baseball cap or with no hat at all and I thought their heads looked cold. For some reason, that's always stuck with me.
This unisex hat starts with 1x1 twisted rib and then works into the colorwork pattern on the body. The crown is a "star" design that is formed rather naturally. The hat also has direction for two weights as mentioned. The fingering version has a looser gauge than the wor
Backup Goalie Knit Hat by Terri Kruse
What is Being Made
The Backup Goalie is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Terri Kruse. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished hat with a circumference of 20 inches (Adult M Fingering), 22.4 inches (Adult L Fingering), or 19.5 inches (Adult L Worsted), with a consistent length of 9.5 inches across all sizes. The Worsted weight version stretches to accommodate heads up to 22 inches in circumference, while the Fingering weight in the larger size offers a slightly slouchy fit for a more relaxed silhouette.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs stranded colorwork knitting, a technique where two colors are carried across the row to create a patterned fabric. Stranded knitting requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension to ensure even stitches and a professional appearance. The pattern is worked in the round on circular needles, which is the standard construction method for seamless hats. After completion, the finished pieces are washed and blocked to set the gauge and ensure proper sizing and drape.
Stitches Used
The Backup Goalie hat is constructed primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic V-pattern texture characteristic of most knit hats. This stitch is combined with stranded colorwork techniques to incorporate the multi-color design elements throughout the hat.
Materials and Needles
For the Fingering Weight Hat: The pattern calls for Sunshine Yarns Classic Sock yarn, which is 100% Superwash Merino with 370 yards per 100 grams (3.53 oz). Only 1/2 skein is required, making this an economical project. Needles include one US 2/2.75mm circular needle (16 inches) and one set of US 5/3.75mm double-pointed needles, or needle size as needed to obtain the specified gauge of 25 stitches and 28 rows on the larger needle in stranded stockinette, after washing and blocking.
For the Worsted Weight Hat: This version uses one US 3/3.25mm circular needle (16 inches), one US 4/3.5mm circular needle (16 inches), and one set of US 5/3.75mm double-pointed needles, or needle size to obtain the specified gauge of 20 stitches and 25 rows on the larger needle in stranded stockinette, after washing and blocking. The worsted weight construction produces a warmer, more substantial hat suitable for colder climates.
Pattern Notes
The pattern includes sizing notes on page 2 of the PDF to assist knitters in selecting the appropriate size for their intended wearer. The use of Superwash Merino yarn makes this hat easy to care for, as it can be machine washed without felting, ideal for a practical winter accessory.
