Babymütze Ole – Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Babymütze Ole is a knitted baby hat designed by Ellen Hildebrandt. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat with a circumference of 34 cm and a height of 15 cm, making it suitable for infants. The pattern includes an I-Cord detail, adding a decorative and functional element to the completed garment.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The main fabric is created using stockinette stitch (glatt rechts), which produces a smooth, classic appearance. Knitters will work in the round using a circular needle technique with double-pointed needles, alternating between knit and purl rounds to maintain proper stitch definition. The pattern includes yarn overs for textural interest and shaping, as well as decrease techniques such as knit two together (zusammenstricken) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (übzogen zusammenstricken), which create the necessary shaping for the hat's crown. An I-Cord finish is incorporated, a technique requiring working stitches back and forth on two needles of the set to create a decorative cord element.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (rechts stricken) – the primary stitch forming the stockinette base
  • Purl stitch (links stricken) – used in alternating rounds when working in the round
  • Yarn over (Umschlag) – creates deliberate openings and increases
  • Knit two together (zusammenstricken) – right-leaning decrease
  • Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (übzogen zusammenstricken) – left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
  • Twisted stitches (verschränkt stricken) – adds texture by working into the back loop
  • I-Cord stitch – a tubular cord created by working stitches on two needles repeatedly

Materials and Tools

The Babymütze Ole pattern calls for 50 grams of 4-ply yarn. The designer's example uses High Twist Concept color yarn in the shade Mint (04), which is composed of 80% Merino wool and 20% Polyamide, providing durability and softness suitable for delicate baby skin. The yardage for this yarn weight is 200 meters per 50 grams. Knitters will need one set of 3 mm double-pointed needles (Nadelspiel) and one stitch marker to track round progression. The gauge is 30 stitches and 45 rows over 10 centimeters when worked in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

This pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable working in the round with double-pointed needles and executing basic decreases and yarn overs. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to work from home and reference abbreviations and techniques as needed throughout the project.
