Baby Penguin and Polar Bears Sweater by Jane Burns
What is Being Made
This is a charming baby sweater featuring adorable penguin and polar bear motifs, designed by Jane Burns as a downloadable knitting pattern. The sweater is available in five sizes to fit babies from newborn through age 2-3 years, with finished chest measurements ranging from 18 inches (45.5 cm) to 25 inches (63.5 cm). The design combines colorwork elements with a classic pullover construction, making it an ideal project for creating memorable handmade garments for infants and toddlers.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The sweater employs colorwork knitting techniques to create the penguin and polar bear designs across the garment. The construction begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles before transitioning to stockinette stitch on larger needles for the main body, a standard approach that provides elasticity at edges while maintaining structure in the body of the sweater. The pattern includes shaping for a fitted silhouette appropriate for babies and toddlers.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch – Used for the initial rows (8 to 14 rows depending on size) at the cast-on edge to create a decorative, textured border
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch for the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Ribbing – Implied through the use of smaller needles at the beginning, providing stretch and recovery at edges
- Colorwork Stitches – Knit stitches worked in multiple yarn colors to create the penguin and polar bear motifs across the sweater front and back
Materials Required
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in King Cole Glitz DK (97% Premium Acrylic, 3% Polyester blend, 290 meters per 100 grams). Specific yardage requirements vary by size:

- Yarn B for Penguin Version (Marzipan, shade 1724) – 1 ball for sizes 0-6, 6-12, 12-18 months; 2 balls for sizes 18-24 months and 2-3 years
- Yarn B for Polar Bear Version (Mint, shade 102) – 1 ball for sizes 0-6 and 6-12 months; 2 balls for sizes 12-18 months, 18-24 months, and 2-3 years
- Yarn C (Diamond White, shade 483) – 1 ball for sizes 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, and 18-24 months; 2 balls for size 2-3 years
- Yarn D for Penguin Version (Jet Black, shade 480) – 1 ball for all sizes
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires straight needles in 3.25mm and 4mm sizes for working the flat pieces, as well as 3.25mm circular needles for sections that benefit from circular needle construction. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, 6 clear buttons for closure, and small oddments of orange and black DK yarn for embellishing details on the penguin or polar bear faces.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters new to colorwork and garment construction. The straightforward shaping, clear size progression, and use of basic stitches make this an excellent project for developing fundamental knitting skills while creating a delightful finished garment.
