Product Description
The colours are inspired by Italian cuisine (lemons and olives) and the design is based on a traditional American log cabin quilt. It is not, however, worked in separate panels but from end to end with the varied mosaic stitches mimicking the log cabin effect.
It is worked from end to end in 7 sections with 11 separate panels and has written and charted instructions.
Mosaic knitting is a simple colourwork technique that uses two colours and slip stitches. Each colour is used for two rows. All the stitches that are slipped on the RS will also be slipped on the WS - both with the yarn on the wrong side of the work
Two skeins of each colour in DK are needed for this. The sample uses Eden Cottage Yarns Oakworth and Pendle.
Baby Cabin Knitted Blanket by Lisa Featherstone
What is Being Made
Baby Cabin is a lovely baby blanket designed by Lisa Featherstone for a couple expecting their first child. This knitted throw combines cultural inspiration from both Italian and American heritage. The blanket reflects Italian cuisine through its color palette of lemons and olives, while the design draws from the traditional American log cabin quilt pattern. Rather than being constructed from separate panels, the blanket is worked end to end, creating a cohesive piece that mimics the distinctive log cabin effect through varied mosaic stitches.
Techniques and Stitches Used
Baby Cabin employs mosaic knitting techniques throughout its construction. Mosaic patterns are used in varied combinations to create the visual effect of a log cabin quilt without requiring pieced panels. This approach allows the blanket to be worked continuously from end to end while achieving the characteristic geometric appearance of traditional log cabin designs.
The mosaic stitches used in this pattern can cause the fabric to bunch in certain areas. Lisa Featherstone strongly recommends knitting a swatch before beginning the full project to test the stitch patterns and understand how the fabric behaves, ensuring the finished blanket meets your expectations.
Materials and Specifications
Baby Cabin is worked in double-knit (DK/8 ply) wool, a versatile yarn weight that provides excellent drape and durability for baby blankets. The pattern uses two colors of yarn to achieve the log cabin effect and color-blocked design.
In the sample shown, the yarns are:
- Eden Cottage Yarns Pendle Merino in DK weight, colorway Spring Buds (C1): 420 meters / 460 yards per 100g skein, with 2 skeins required (180g / 6.5 oz total)
Difficulty Level
Baby Cabin is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While mosaic knitting is a manageable technique, the varied stitch patterns and the recommendation to swatch beforehand indicate this project is best suited for knitters with some experience beyond basic garter and stockinette stitch work.
