Product Description
This is a fast and easy cardigan I designed for baby William. It is knit from the top down, and flat on circular 4mm needles (for ease), and most 8ply yarn in your stash should be suitable, just ensure your gauge is 22st x 30 rows on 4mm. The sleeves are sectioned off and completed after the body is finished.
The pattern is available in the following sizes: to fit 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months.
Materials: 1 (1, 2) balls of 100gms 8ply yarn (Suggested yarn: 4 Seasons Marvel Soft, 230m). Buttons: 3x 10-12mm buttons are needed.
This is the boy version of my “Baby Joy Cardigan Pattern” for girls.
Happy knitting!!
Baby Boy Joy Cardigan by PlayfulKnits Designs
What Is Being Made
The Baby Boy Joy Cardigan is a beginner-friendly knitted cardigan designed for babies in three size options. The pattern accommodates chest sizes of 40cm, 45cm, and 50cm, with corresponding finished lengths of 25cm, 28cm, and 30cm respectively. This makes it suitable for babies aged approximately 3 to 9 months. The cardigan features a classic button-front closure with three buttons and combines knit and purl stitching for visual interest and texture.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs a combination of fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The main body of the cardigan is worked flat using circular needles, while the sleeves are knit in the round for seamless construction. The pattern incorporates yarn overs and decreases to create buttonholes, allowing for functional closures along the front edge. Increases are strategically placed throughout the pattern using make-one stitches to shape the garment and achieve the proper finished dimensions. The use of circular needles (40–80cm) is recommended for comfort during flat knitting, even though the work is not done in the round for the body sections.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the foundational stitch used throughout the majority of the cardigan
- Purl stitch (P) – used in specific rows to create textured panels and definition
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping and buttonhole construction
- Yarn over (YO) – creates decorative eyelets and buttonholes in combination with decreases
- Make-one stitch (M1) – an increase stitch used to add stitches for shaping the cardigan body
- Stocking stitch – the primary fabric texture created by alternating knit and purl rows
Materials and Gauge
The Baby Boy Joy Cardigan is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn. The suggested yarn is 4 Seasons "Marvel Soft 8ply" in Blue, which is 100% acrylic. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (3 months) requires 1 ball of 100gms with 230 meters per ball, while the two larger sizes (6 and 9 months) each require 2 balls. Alternative yarns with the same gauge may be substituted.
The pattern calls for 4mm circular needles in lengths of 40–80cm, along with three buttons for the front closure. The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows measured over 10 centimeters in stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all three sizes.
Pattern Difficulty
This cardigan is rated as a beginner-level project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch vocabulary, simple shaping techniques, and clear row-by-row instructions provide a manageable introduction to knitting a fitted baby garment. The combination of knit and purl stitches adds visual variety without introducing complex colorwork or advanced techniques.
