Baba Yaga's House by Stana D. Sortor

Project Overview

Baba Yaga's House is an intermediate-level knitted decorative toy designed by Stana D. Sortor. This whimsical three-dimensional structure captures the folkloric imagery of the legendary witch's iconic dwelling. The finished piece measures 9.5 inches (24 cm) wide, 18.5 inches (47 cm) long including the porch, and 15 inches (38 cm) tall without legs, making it a substantial decorative accent or collectible toy suitable for display.

Construction Technique and Methods

This knitted house is constructed using circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPN) to create three-dimensional knitted components that are assembled into a complete structure. The project employs worsted weight yarn worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. The construction likely involves knitting individual panels or sections that are then joined together, with the interior reinforced using sturdy cardboard or plywood to maintain structural integrity. The optional wooden chicken legs reference the traditional folklore element of Baba Yaga's house standing on chicken legs, adding an authentic decorative detail to the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

Primary Yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash, a 100% superwash wool yarn offering 220 yards per 100 grams. This high-quality wool provides durability and easy care for a decorative piece.

Color Palette: The design uses six coordinated colors from the Cascade 220 Superwash line:

  • Dark Ginger (#858) – Main color (MC), requiring 500 yards / 457 meters across 3 skeins
  • Cocoa (#211) – Contrast color 1 (C1), requiring 780 yards / 713 meters across 4 skeins
  • Golden (#877) – Contrast color 2 (C2), requiring 20 yards / 18 meters across 1 skein
  • Frosted Almond (#228) – Contrast color 3 (C3), requiring 40 yards / 36.5 meters across 1 skein
  • Extra Crème Cafe (#873) – Contrast color 4 (C4), requiring 300 yards / 274 meters across 2 skeins
  • Blue (#846) – Contrast color 5 (C5), requiring 20 yards / 18 meters across 1 skein

Total Yardage: Approximately 1,660 yards / 1,515 meters of yarn in total.

Tools and Notions

This project requires circular needles in US size 10 (6 mm) and a set of five double-pointed needles (DPN) also in US size 10 (6 mm). Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming, scissors, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and stitch holders for managing active stitches. Structural support materials include sturdy cardboard or plywood to reinforce the interior walls of the house. Optional wooden chicken legs add an authentic folkloric detail to complete the design.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Baba Yaga's House is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in stockinette stitch, color work, and basic shaping techniques. The three-dimensional construction and color changes require attention to detail and familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors and stitch holders throughout the project.
