Azerbaijani Style Slipper Sock Pattern

What is Being Made

This knitting pattern produces jorab, traditional Azerbaijani slipper socks with a rich cultural heritage spanning centuries. These socks were historically crafted as an essential component of a bride's dowry in Azerbaijani tradition. The pattern is available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—accommodating various foot dimensions from children through adult wearers.

Techniques Used

The Azerbaijani Style Slipper Sock employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create both visual interest and durability:

  • Stranded colorwork: Two contrasting yarn colors are carried and worked simultaneously across rows to create the traditional patterned design characteristic of authentic jorab
  • Twined knit heel: A specialized heel construction technique that reinforces the heel area, making these slipper socks exceptionally warm and sturdy for extended wear
  • Magic loop or DPN construction: The pattern accommodates both circular needle magic loop method and double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knit stitches combined with colorwork techniques. The primary stitch is the knit stitch, worked in stranded colorwork method where two colors are managed simultaneously to create the patterned sections. The twined knit heel employs specialized heel shaping stitches to provide structure and durability in this high-wear area.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern calls for DK or light worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors. Yarn quantities vary by size:

  • Large: Approximately 260 yards (100g/3.53 oz.) main color and 85 yards contrast color
  • Medium: Approximately 240 yards main color and 80 yards contrast color
  • Small: Approximately 200 yards main color and 70 yards contrast color

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires US Size 1-2 needles (2.5mm) for achieving proper gauge. A 30-inch circular needle is recommended for magic loop construction, with DPNs offered as an alternative. For Medium and Large sizes, a 16-inch circular needle is also recommended for the leg portions. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 13 stitches by 16 rows over a 2-inch by 2-inch square using Size 1.5US (2.5mm) needles in stranded colorwork. Knitters should adjust needle sizes up or down as needed to obtain this gauge for proper fit. The Large size is finished to approximately Women's US Size 8.5. An extended XL size option is available by adjusting gauge to 12 stitches per 2 inches and following the Large instructions with the provided chart.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to advance to colorwork techniques and specialized heel construction methods.
