What Is Being Made

Aysgarth is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by independent designer Kathryn Folkerth that offers two versatile projects: a delicate scarf and a generous wrap. Both pieces showcase elegant lace work and are sized to suit different preferences. The scarf measures 9 x 77 inches (23 x 196 centimeters), making it a refined accessory perfect for layering or draping. The wrap version is significantly larger at 18.75 x 84 inches (47.5 x 213.5 centimeters), providing ample fabric for wrapping, shawling, or wearing as a generous shawlette.

Techniques and Stitch Work

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs lace knitting as its primary technique, creating an openwork fabric that is both visually striking and lightweight. The pattern utilizes fundamental decreasing techniques, including knit two together (K2tog) decreases, which are essential for shaping the lace motifs throughout the design. Knitters will work primarily in stockinette stitch (St st) for portions of the garment, combined with the lace pattern sections. The pattern requires wet blocking to properly set the lace and achieve the finished dimensions, a crucial finishing step that opens up the delicate stitchwork and ensures even drape.

Yarn and Materials

Aysgarth is designed for sport weight yarn, requiring approximately 540 yards (494 meters) for the scarf version and 1115 yards (1019 meters) for the wrap. The pattern samples showcase two different fiber blends suited to sport weight construction:

• Scarf sample: Madelintosh Tosh Sport, a 100% Superwash Merino Wool yarn with 270 yards per 100 grams, shown in the Fallen Cloud colorway. Two hanks are required for this version.
• Wrap sample: Stolen Stitches Nua, a blend of 60% Merino, 20% Yak, and 20% linen with 153 yards per 50 grams, shown in the Capall colorway. Seven hanks are needed for the wrap.

Knitters will need US size 5 (3.75 millimeter) straight or circular needles and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern's success. The lace pattern gauge is 24.5 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when wet blocked, while stockinette stitch gauge measures 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters). The pattern begins with a cast-on of 55 stitches for the scarf or 115 stitches for the wrap, allowing knitters to choose their preferred finished size and yardage requirements accordingly.
