Crochet Techniques and Construction

Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – forms the foundation and creates openwork sections
- Single crochet (sc) – provides structure and definition
- Double crochet (dc) – creates the primary fabric with good drape
- Half double crochet (hdc) – used in doily sections for delicate detailing
- Bobble stitch – adds dimensional texture and visual interest
- Picot stitch – creates decorative edging details
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Awana Shawl is crafted using Hakelgarn 100 by St. George, a 100% cotton crochet thread specifically designed for delicate, openwork projects. This yarn weight classification as thread ensures the finished shawl will be lightweight and breathable, perfect for summer wear.
Yarn requirements vary by colorway:
- Two-color version: Ivory (132g or approximately 750m) and Blue (120g or approximately 670m)
- Beige version: 250g or approximately 1410m
The pattern is worked with a 2 mm crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for the delicate thread weight. The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 14 rows in double crochet, measuring 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4") when worked with the 2 mm hook and recommended yarn.
