Product Description

Meet Avery! She’s a long-haired beauty who’s super-cuddly (20 inches tall!)… and she’ll make the perfect friend for your own beautiful girl!

FreshStitches dolls have been in the works for a while… the perfect doll needed to be adorable, but still easy to crochet. Well, you’re looking at her!

Avery’s clothes are crocheted on. This means there’s a minimum of sewing and there are no pieces to get lost in play! She’s suitable for your littlest one, but feel free to use craft eyes (instead of the felt eyes, shown) for children over 3.

Avery is wearing a dress with ruffle cap-sleeves and Mary Jane shoes.

To complete your own doll, you’ll need:

  • 515 yards of worsted weight yarn (shown in Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton): Tan (200 yds), Yellow (200 yds), Purple (95 yds) and Black (20 yds).
  • A size H (5.0mm) crochet hook (or size required for a nice-looking fabric)
  • A tapestry needle
  • 2x2 inch pieces of felt in: pink, white, green and black

Avery Doll by Stacey Trock

What Is Being Made

The Avery Doll is a 20-inch tall amigurumi-style crochet doll designed by Stacey Trock. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a soft, stuffed doll suitable for display or as a handmade gift. The doll was originally designed in May 2013 and is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Fresh Stitches.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitches used include:

  • Single crochet (sc): The foundation stitch for building the doll's structure
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog): Used for decreasing stitches to shape the doll's body and features
  • Chain (ch): Creates the foundation chains for beginning rows and sections
  • Slip stitch (sl st): Joins rounds and secures stitches to create seamless transitions

The pattern is worked in the round using the amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting in continuous spirals to create three-dimensional stuffed forms. This method allows crafters to build the doll's head, body, limbs, and other components as separate pieces that are later assembled.

Yarn and Materials

The Avery Doll pattern offers flexibility in yarn selection. The sample doll is crocheted using worsted weight yarn with an H (5.0mm) crochet hook. The pattern specifies the following yardage for the sample:

  • Main Color (MC): Off-White, 200 yards (Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, color Drift)
  • Contrast Color (CC): Yellow, 200 yards (Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, color Dandelion)

One of the pattern's key features is its adaptability: any weight yarn can be used to create the doll. Crafters should use the hook size recommended on their chosen yarn's ball band and adjust tension as needed. For a larger version, bulky weight yarn can be substituted, though this will increase yardage requirements beyond the stated amounts.

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and the crochet hook, completing the Avery Doll requires:

  • Polyester stuffing to fill the doll and create its three-dimensional form
  • 2x2 inch pieces of felt in pink, white, green, and black for facial features and details
  • A sewing needle and matching thread for attaching felt pieces and assembling components
  • A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and securing pieces together

The combination of crocheted fabric with hand-sewn felt accents creates a charming, finished doll with defined features and personality.
