Product Description

This design was inspired by the wonderful autumn colours of the trees around beautiful Perthshire in Central Scotland where I used to live. The pattern itself based on skeleton leaves which I’ve always had a fascination for! The cardigan body and sleeves are knitted bottom up and in the round. Steek stitches are included in the body which will later be cut open for the creation of the button bands. The body and sleeves are joined to create the yoke. A few decrease rows are worked at the underarms to ensure a close fit. The yoke patterning is then worked with decreases included in the last few rows for shaping. Short rows are added to raise the back neck ensuring a better fit. My Autumnsong Beanie pattern knits to the same gauge so can be a wearable swatch to ensure gauge is met or to try your own favourite alternative colour combinations. Hyperlinks are included in the pattern for any techniques which may be new to you.

Autumnsong Cardigan by Olach Designs

Design Inspiration and Overview

The Autumnsong Cardigan is a knitted design inspired by the autumn colours of Perthshire in Central Scotland. The pattern features skeleton leaf motifs throughout, reflecting the designer's fascination with this natural imagery. This intermediate-level knitting project combines colorwork with structural shaping techniques to create a fitted, wearable cardigan suitable for autumn and transitional seasons.

What Is Being Made

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a cardigan featuring a patterned yoke and coordinating body. The design is worked primarily in the round with strategic shaping to achieve a close, tailored fit. The cardigan includes button bands created through steek cutting, making it a project that introduces knitters to advanced construction methods.

Construction Techniques

The Autumnsong Cardigan employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The cardigan body and sleeves are knitted from the bottom upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and a traditional building process
  • Circular knitting: The body and sleeves are worked in the round, which creates seamless fabric and maintains consistent tension throughout
  • Steek stitches: Reinforced stitches are incorporated into the body where the cardigan will later be cut open, creating a secure foundation for the button bands and front opening
  • Yoke shaping: The body and sleeves are joined at the yoke, with decreases strategically placed in the final rows to shape the shoulders and neckline
  • Short rows: Short-row shaping is used at the back neck to raise the back neckline, ensuring proper fit and preventing the neck from sagging
  • Underarm decreases: Targeted decrease rows at the underarms create a close, fitted silhouette

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates colorwork stitching to create the skeleton leaf motifs. The yoke features patterned rows that include both the decorative colorwork and structural decreases for shaping. The exact stitch abbreviations and row-by-row instructions are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern.

Materials

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, drapable fabric suitable for layering. Knitters will need appropriately sized needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in the range of 3.25–3.75mm (US 3–5), depending on desired gauge. The pattern references the Autumnsong Beanie as a coordinating project that knits to the same gauge, allowing knitters to use it as a swatch to verify gauge before committing to the full cardigan or to experiment with alternative colour combinations.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore advanced techniques such as steek cutting, yoke construction, and short-row shaping. The combination of circular knitting, colorwork, and structural shaping makes this an engaging project for developing knitters.
