Product Description
So when you hear this autumn song Clear your heads and get ready to run So when you hear this autumn song Remember the best times are yet to come
Manic Street Preachers
I moved to Shetland from the Scottish Mainland just over a year ago and although I do miss family and friends, I don’t miss town life at all. One thing I do miss however is the woodland and trees we were surrounded by in beautiful Perthshire. This beanie was inspired by the colours of the Perthshire woodlands in Autumn and by skeleton leaves which I’ve always been fascinated by. The name comes from a song by one of my favourite bands.
This beanie can also be used as a wearable swatch for my Autumnsong Sweater pattern as they are both knitted to the same gauge, ideal for trying out your own colour combos!
Autumnsong Beanie by Olach Designs
What Is Being Made
The Autumnsong Beanie is a hand-knitted hat designed to fit an average adult head with a finished circumference of 53cm (21 inches). This one-size beanie combines vibrant autumn-inspired colorwork with classic knit construction, creating a warm and visually striking accessory suitable for seasonal wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft, specifically employing colorwork knitting techniques. The beanie is worked in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs), which is a traditional method for constructing seamless hats from the crown downward or bottom upward. The pattern incorporates multiple color changes throughout the design, requiring the knitter to manage several yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and stitch quality.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes fundamental knit stitches combined with strategic color changes to create the decorative pattern. Working in the round with DPNs eliminates the need for seaming, resulting in a seamless, professional finish. The colorwork requires careful attention to yarn management and stitch tension to ensure even fabric and crisp color transitions. Stitch markers are used to denote the beginning of rounds and track pattern repeats, essential for maintaining accuracy when working with multiple colors.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this beanie is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork projects. The intermediate classification reflects the complexity of managing multiple yarn colors while maintaining consistent knitting tension and following a detailed stitch pattern.
Materials Required
The Autumnsong Beanie is crafted using Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift yarn, a premium 100% pure Shetland wool available in 4-ply weight. One ball each of the following colors are needed:
- MC (Main Color) – Madder 597
- CC1 – Mustard 425
- CC2 – Amber 478
- CC3 – Maroon 595
- CC4 – Ginger 462
- CC5 – Chartreuse 365
- CC6 – Granny Smith 1140
- CC7 – Leprechaun 259
- CC8 – Ivy 815
Tools and Notions
Construction requires the following equipment and supplies:
- One set of 2.75mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the ribbed cuff or initial rounds, or preferred method for working in the round
- One set of 3.25mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the body, or preferred method for working in the round
- Stitch markers for tracking rounds and pattern repeats
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- One round balloon inflated to a diameter of 53cm, used as a blocking aid to set the finished beanie to its intended dimensions
Yarn Weight and Yardage
The pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn, with each color ball containing 105 meters of yarn per 26 grams. This lightweight yarn weight creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition, making the colorwork pattern clearly visible while maintaining a comfortable drape suitable for a hat.
Design Inspiration
The Autumnsong Beanie draws its name and color palette from autumn imagery, featuring a rich spectrum of seasonal hues including mustard, amber, maroon, ginger, chartreuse, and various shades of green. The thoughtful color selection creates a dynamic, multi-colored design that celebrates the visual richness of the fall season.
