Happy Autumn!
I’ve made several changes to the basic pattern of my Winter Woods Hat pattern and come up with a lighter version for Fall weather. It doesn’t matter which direction your cables go - I knit Right Cross cables when I have a cable needle and Left Cross cables when I cable without a needle. So whatever you like, keep the knitting enjoyable and you will end up with a timeless hat that even guys like to wear.
Enjoy!
Autumn Woods Hat by Kiki Geiger
What is Being Made
The Autumn Woods Hat is a knitted beanie designed as a lighter-weight alternative to the Winter Woods Hat pattern, making it suitable for fall and transitional weather. This unisex hat is crafted to be a timeless accessory that appeals to all wearers, with finished dimensions of 8 inches in height by 7 inches in width when unstretched (20 x 18 centimeters).
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project features cable knit construction as its primary design element. The pattern incorporates both Right Cross and Left Cross cable techniques, giving knitters flexibility in their approach. Designer Kiki Geiger notes that cables can be worked with or without a cable needle, allowing crafters to choose their preferred method. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which is a standard construction method for hat crowns.
Stitches Used
The Autumn Woods Hat utilizes cable stitches as the featured stitch pattern. The designer emphasizes that the direction of the cables—whether Right Cross or Left Cross—is flexible and can be adjusted based on personal preference and knitting style. This approach prioritizes keeping the knitting process enjoyable while achieving a professional, finished appearance.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern requires 1 skein of worsted weight yarn with a yardage of approximately 200 yards. The designer used Plymouth Yarns "Encore Tweed," which is composed of 75% acrylic, 22% wool, and 3% viscose, weighing 100 grams and made in Turkey. The pattern allows for yarn substitution flexibility—knitters can choose all-wool or all-synthetic alternatives depending on their preferred care and washing methods.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US 6 (5mm) short circular needles for the main body of the hat, with double-pointed needles (dpns) for working the crown shaping. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Autumn Woods Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cables and circular needle techniques. The pattern was designed by Kiki Geiger and published in October 2020.
