Product Description

Lightweight and warm, this is the perfect piece to grab whether you plan on hibernating for just a day or need to stay warm and toasty all winter long. Worked on large needles, this throw will work up quickly, and the self-striping character of Aero will keep you interested. The center portion is worked in a variation of the Honey Bee stitch, with panels of a complementary pattern on each side of the center panel. Work begins with a wide band of garter, and ends the same way. A narrower band of garter is added to each side of the throw.

Autumn Retreat Throw by Therese Chynoweth

What Is Being Made

The Autumn Retreat Throw is a knitted blanket designed by Therese Chynoweth in three progressively larger sizes: Small (36¾" wide × 41" long), Medium (44½" wide × 51¾" long), and Large (52¼" wide × 62½" long). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a cozy throw blanket suitable for draping over furniture or using as a personal wrap during cooler seasons.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work

The Autumn Retreat Throw employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The pattern incorporates yarn overs (yo) and decreases using ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) methods, which create decorative lace-like elements throughout the design. The throw features multiple stitch panels with varying gauges: a center panel worked at approximately 14½ stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches, and side panels at 12 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches. This gauge variation creates distinct textural zones within the finished piece.

The stitch pattern is presented in both charted and written line-by-line formats, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method. Instructions are written for the smallest size with larger sizes provided in parentheses, streamlining the pattern for all three size options. Stitch markers are essential notions for tracking pattern repeats and maintaining accurate stitch placement throughout the project.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Autumn Retreat Throw is worked in bulky weight yarn (Bulky #5), which creates a substantial, quick-to-knit fabric. The pattern calls for 820 yards (Small), 1266 yards (Medium), or 1797 yards (Large) of bulky weight yarn. The throw is shown in Berroco Aero, a premium blend containing 65% alpaca, 28% nylon, and 7% wool. This fiber composition provides softness and warmth from the alpaca while the nylon and wool contribute durability and elasticity. Each cake of Berroco Aero yields 164 yards at 1¾ ounces, requiring 5 cakes (Small), 8 cakes (Medium), or 11 cakes (Large) to complete the project.

Knitting is worked on a US 11 [8 mm] circular needle measuring 32 inches [80 cm], or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The circular needle accommodates the width of the throw while allowing for easy stitch management. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Gauge and Pattern Notes

Achieving proper gauge is critical for this project. The center panel should measure approximately 14½ stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches [10 cm], while the side panels should measure 12 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches [10 cm]. Knitters are strongly advised to check both gauges before beginning the main project to ensure the finished throw meets the intended dimensions. The pattern includes specific row instructions, such as Row 7, which combines knit and purl stitches with yarn overs and decreases to build the textured design across all stitch panels.

Didn’t like the pattern for this yarn. Ended up using another pattern of diagonal knit which was perfect for the yummy Berocco Aero yarn.
