Autumn Orange Cowl by Melynda Bernardi

What is Being Made

The Autumn Orange Cowl is a one-size-fits-all neck warmer designed by Melynda Bernardi of French Press Knits, LLC. This cozy cowl features a beautiful autumn orange colorway and is worked seamlessly in the round using super chunky yarn, making it a quick and satisfying knitting project suitable for intermediate-level knitters.

Knitting Techniques Used

This cowl is constructed using fundamental circular knitting techniques. The project begins with casting on stitches directly onto circular needles and joining to work in the round without seams. The cowl is worked continuously in the round using a simple two-row repeating pattern, eliminating the need for complicated shaping or increases and decreases. The odd number of cast-on stitches creates a naturally reversible fabric that looks finished on both sides.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Autumn Orange Cowl uses only two fundamental knitting stitches throughout the entire project:

  • Knit (K): The basic stitch that creates a smooth, textured surface
  • Purl (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, creating visual interest and texture

The pattern alternates between these two stitches in a seed stitch throughout. Seed stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches both horizontally and vertically, resulting in a bumpy, textured fabric with excellent drape and elasticity. Round 1 works K1, P1 across, while Round 2 reverses this to P1, K1, ensuring the stitches nestle properly and create the characteristic seed stitch appearance. This two-round repeat continues until the cowl reaches the desired length, approximately 30 rows for the finished piece shown.

Materials and Tools

The Autumn Orange Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an economical and accessible project. The pattern calls for 1 skein of Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn, which is a super chunky weight yarn that knits quickly and creates a substantial, warm fabric perfect for fall and winter wear. The yarn is worked on 16-inch circular needles in US size 13, which are appropriately sized for super chunky yarn and allow for comfortable in-the-round knitting. The gauge is 9 stitches and 12 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, providing a reference point for yarn substitution if needed. The pattern begins with casting on 41 stitches, an odd number that ensures the seed stitch pattern works seamlessly throughout the circumference.
