Product Description
This hip-length cardigan was inspired by the swathes of richly coloured, autumn leaves covering the ground. My aim was to create a comfy cardigan that’s easy to slip on, but also well shaped and elegant. The cardigan is seamlessly knitted top-down. The autumn leaves pattern adds a very subtle increase to the front edge, giving a slightly flared waist for comfort. The casual matching belt gives a flattering waistline and is held in place by the highly distinctive crossed-leaves belt loop at the back. Simple, comfortable and stylish, this is a cardigan you won’t ever want to take off!
Pattern Notes The main body is worked flat, with a cir needle used to accommodate the large number of stitches and curve of the raglan. Sleeves are worked in the round using DPNs. If a cir needle is used to work the sleeves, use the Magic Loop method where necessary. The chart shows RS only - WS rows are purled except for DM10 at beginning and end.
Autumn Leaf Kimono by Kyoko Nakayoshi
What Is Being Made
The Autumn Leaf Kimono is a hip-length cardigan designed by Kyoko Nakayoshi, inspired by the rich colors of autumn leaves covering the ground. This seamlessly knitted garment combines comfort with elegant shaping, featuring a casual matching belt and a distinctive crossed-leaves belt loop at the back. The cardigan is designed to be easy to slip on while maintaining a well-shaped, flattering silhouette.
Design and Construction
This cardigan is knitted seamlessly using a top-down construction method, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The autumn leaves pattern is strategically incorporated into the design to create a subtle increase along the front edge, resulting in a gently flared waist that provides both comfort and flattering shaping. The crossed-leaves belt loop at the back is a highly distinctive design feature that secures the matching belt in place, allowing the wearer to adjust the waistline for an optimal fit.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The pattern employs seamless top-down knitting, a technique that begins at the neckline and works downward to the hem, allowing for easy fitting adjustments during construction. The autumn leaves motif is integrated throughout the cardigan, adding visual interest while simultaneously functioning as a subtle shaping element. The pattern includes specialized shaping for the flared waist and features the intricate crossed-leaves design for the belt loop, demonstrating intermediate-level knitting skills.
Materials and Specifications
The Autumn Leaf Kimono is designed to be knitted with The Buffalo Wool Co Super Sexy yarn, a luxurious 6ply DK weight blend consisting of 50% bison down and 50% silk. This premium fiber combination provides exceptional softness and drape. The yarn is available in the colorway Spice It Up, which complements the autumn leaf theme. Yardage requirements range from 10 to 14 skeins of 50g (128 meters or 140 yards per skein), depending on the size selected.
The pattern is worked to a tension of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimeters on appropriate needles for DK weight yarn. The cardigan is available in eight sizes, ranging from UK size 8 to 22 (US sizes 32 to 46 inches), with the sample garment shown in size 10/34 inches.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with seamless construction, stitch pattern integration, and garment shaping techniques.
