Aurora Slouch Crochet Hat by Jennifer Renaud
What Is Being Made
The Aurora Slouch is a relaxed, comfortable crochet hat designed by Jennifer Renaud. This slouchy-style hat features a fitted band at the crown that transitions into a looser, draped body, creating a casual and flattering silhouette. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to fit kids, teens, and adults, with head circumferences ranging from 18" to 24-1/2".
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Aurora Slouch employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The hat is constructed in two distinct sections: a fitted hat band worked in a stitch pattern that provides structure and shape, followed by the main body of the hat which is worked in rounds to create the slouchy crown. The construction method allows the hat to sit securely on the head while the body relaxes into a comfortable, oversized fit.
Stitches Used
This pattern utilizes several core crochet stitches to achieve its texture and structure:
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitches used to begin the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): A basic, tight stitch used throughout the design
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch providing balanced fabric
- Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch used in sections of the pattern
- Triple Crochet (tr): An even taller stitch for openness and drape
- Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hhdc): A textured variation that creates visual interest and dimension
- Herringbone Half Double Crochet Decrease (hhdc2tog): A decrease technique used for shaping
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and transition between sections
Materials and Tools
The Aurora Slouch is designed to be worked with worsted weight yarn, also known as aran weight (weight category 4). Two crochet hooks are required: a G/6/4.00mm hook for the hat band section and an H/8/5.00mm hook for the body. The larger hook creates the looser gauge needed for the slouchy effect. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and a small scrap piece of yarn for markers.
The sample shown was created using Lion Brand Wool Ease in Fisherman (80% acrylic / 20% wool blend, 140g / 5oz / 87 yards) and Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in Happy (100% acrylic, 150g / 5.3oz / 344 yards). These yarn choices provide durability and easy care while delivering the desired drape and texture.
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct fit. The hat band section is worked at 4.5 stitches and 9 rows per 2 inches using the G hook, while the body of the hat is worked at a looser gauge of 7.5 stitches and 7 rounds per 2 inches using the H hook. This gauge difference is intentional and creates the transition from fitted band to slouchy crown. The pattern accommodates three size ranges: Kids (18"-20" head circumference), Teen/Adult Small (20-1/2"-22-1/2"), and Adult Medium/Large (23"-24-1/2").
Difficulty Level
The Aurora Slouch is rated as an Easy or beginner-friendly pattern. It uses fundamental crochet stitches and straightforward construction methods, making it an excellent project for those new to crochet or seeking a quick, satisfying make.
