Product Description

Remember going to the amusement park when you were a kid? Cotton candy, scary roller coasters, and best of all, the Gravitron, which spun you around until you felt like you were floating in mid-air, or at least your stomach was? Until the motion sickness set in, you were carefree, buoyant and full of joy. Recapture that floaty feeling as you sweep people off their feet with this cute hat, and your brain floats in a veritable Sea of Tranquility above your neck!

The hat starts with a contrast-color turned hem, continues with a slightly dizzying visual treat – stranded colorwork stripes of alternating semi-solid and variegated yarns, and swirls to a triumphant close at its apex. Then a short-row brim is worked, continuing in the same vertiginous striping on top with a contrast-color underside.

Designed for the Malabrigo Quickies project. Many thanks to Malabrigo Yarn for their sponsorship of this pattern.

Auntie Gravity Hat by Jen Gall

Project Overview

The Auntie Gravity Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Jen Gall that captures the whimsical, weightless sensation of spinning on a Gravitron ride at an amusement park. This downloadable knitting pattern combines playful colorwork with thoughtful construction techniques to create a visually striking hat with dynamic visual movement.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a complete knitted hat featuring a fitted crown, swirled construction at the apex, and a short-row brim. The design is inspired by the floating, carefree feeling of amusement park rides and translates that sensation into a garment with dynamic visual interest and movement.

Construction Techniques

The Auntie Gravity Hat employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:

  • Contrast-Color Turned Hem: The hat begins with a turned hem worked in a contrasting color, creating a clean, finished edge at the lower band
  • Stranded Colorwork: The main body features stranded colorwork stripes that alternate between semi-solid and variegated yarns, creating a "slightly dizzying visual treat" with layered color complexity
  • Crown Shaping: The hat swirls to a close at its apex, incorporating shaping techniques to create the crown
  • Short-Row Brim: A short-row technique is used to construct the brim, allowing for custom shaping and fit around the face
  • Dual-Sided Colorwork: The brim continues the vertiginous striping pattern on the top surface while featuring a contrasting color on the underside

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches combined with stranded colorwork techniques. The pattern uses alternating color stripes worked in both stockinette and colorwork sections, with short-row shaping integrated into the brim construction.

Materials

The Auntie Gravity Hat is designed for worsted weight yarn and is part of the Malabrigo Quickies project, developed in collaboration with Malabrigo Yarn. The pattern calls for both semi-solid and variegated yarns in contrasting colors to achieve the striped colorwork effect. Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required for construction.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle stranded colorwork and short-row shaping techniques. The combination of color changes and custom shaping requires attention to detail and familiarity with these intermediate-level construction methods.
