Product Description

Atlantica sweater is knitted bottom up on straight needles. After the shoulders are seamed, the stitches are picked up for the collar both right and wrong sides. The wide round collar is knitted in the round with two strands of yarn in order to keep the shape and protect from the wind. Purl rows before and after ribbing imitate the Kitchener stitch. The knitting pattern is easy to follow and suitable for advanced beginners. It contains 8 sts of written instructions and photo-tutorial for neck finishing. The pattern is written for all sizes from 9-12 months through 15-16 years.

Atlantica Sweater by ViTalina Craft

What is Being Made

The Atlantica Sweater is a knitted children's pullover sweater designed by ViTalina Craft. This downloadable knitting pattern offers nine size options ranging from 9-12 months through 15-16 years, making it a versatile design for growing children. The finished garment features a classic sweater silhouette with measurements ranging from a 19¾-inch chest for the smallest size to a 34⅝-inch chest for the largest size, with corresponding length adjustments from 12⅝ inches to 23⅝ inches.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric construction method, which creates the smooth, classic sweater appearance. The design incorporates circular knitting using circular needles for constructing the neckline and ribbed edgings, a technique that allows for seamless construction and even tension around curved areas. The pattern also requires basic shaping techniques including increases and decreases to achieve the proper fit across different size ranges.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Atlantica Sweater primarily features stockinette stitch as its main fabric stitch, which is worked over the body and sleeves to create a smooth, refined surface. Ribbed stitching is used for finishing details including the cuffs, hem, and neckline, providing elasticity and a neat, professional edge. The pattern requires working with stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting process, ensuring accuracy across multiple sizes.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Atlantica Sweater is designed to be knitted with worsted weight yarn, specifically an Aran or 10-ply yarn classification. The sample garment pictured in the pattern was created using Rowan Pure Wool Superwash in shade 146. Each 100-gram skein contains 219 yards (200 meters) of yarn. Depending on the size being made, the pattern requires between 2 and 6 skeins of yarn, with smaller sizes (9-12 months) needing 2 skeins and the largest size (15-16 years) requiring 6 skeins.

Needles and Tools Required

This knitting project requires multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction. The main fabric is worked using US 6 (4.0 mm) knitting needles, which produces a gauge of 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Ribbed sections are worked on US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles to create the proper elasticity for cuffs and hems. Two circular needles in US 4 (3.5 mm) are needed—one 50-centimeter needle and one 60-centimeter needle—for working the neckline and other circular sections. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern placement and a knitter's needle (tapestry needle) for weaving in yarn ends and finishing seams.

Difficulty Level

The Atlantica Sweater is classified as an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with multiple needle sizes, following shaping instructions, and using circular needles. The pattern's availability in nine different sizes adds complexity to the instructions but provides flexibility for various ages and skill development.
