Product Description
This hat was inspired by photographs of ski tracks in fresh snow. It is a bottom up hat, knit in the round. It has twisted rib and a simple left cable stitch. The hat is designed as a beanie, but I have included an adjustment if you prefer more of a slouchy hat. The pattern contains approximately 2" of negative ease. Please take fit into consideration when deciding which size hat to knit. The hat has a lot of stretch.
Baby size fits up to 16" circumference
Toddler size fits up to 17" circumference
Child size fits up to 19" circumference
Adult size will fit up to 23" circumference
In honor of the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY, this pattern is available for free until midnight on Sunday October 21,2018.

Aspen Hat by LATE NITE KNITS
Project Overview
The Aspen Hat is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Debra Milstein of LATE NITE KNITS. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile beanie-style hat inspired by the visual aesthetic of ski tracks in fresh snow. The design is knit from the bottom up in the round, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to develop their skills in circular knitting and cable work.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted beanie hat with approximately 2 inches of negative ease, designed to sit snugly on the head. The designer has included adjustments within the pattern to accommodate those who prefer a slouchy hat silhouette instead of the standard beanie fit. The hat features a folded brim that showcases the stitch patterns, making it a visually interesting garment from all angles.
Knitting Techniques and Skills Required
The Aspen Hat is suitable for intermediate knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques. The pattern requires the following skills:
- Knitting in the round: The entire hat is constructed using circular needles or double-pointed needles, a technique essential for creating seamless tubular garments
- Knit and Purl stitches: Basic stitch foundation used throughout the pattern
- Twisted Rib: A textured ribbing technique that creates visual interest and elasticity in the fabric
- Cable knitting: A simple left cable pattern that serves as a focal design element
- Decreasing: Crown shaping requires competency with decrease techniques to taper the hat to its finished point
Stitch Patterns
The Aspen Hat incorporates two primary stitch patterns that work together to create its distinctive appearance. The twisted rib provides vertical texture and structure, while a simple left cable adds visual dimension and sophistication. Both stitch patterns are intentionally continued on the brim when folded up, creating a cohesive design that looks polished from every viewing angle. This thoughtful pattern placement demonstrates intermediate-level design consideration.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern requires DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that knits to a standard gauge. The total yardage needed is approximately one skein, making this an efficient project for yarn stash management. The pattern recommends specific yarn options including Malabrigo Arroyo in Azul Profundo (335 yards per 100 grams, 100% superwash merino) and The Lemonade Shop DK in Stormy Day (231 yards per 100 grams, 100% fiber content).
Tools and Supplies
Knitters will need the following equipment to complete the Aspen Hat:
- Circular needles and/or double-pointed needles in size 3 (3.25 mm), or the size required to achieve proper gauge
- Cable needle for working cable stitches
- Ruler or tape measure for measuring gauge and fit
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
Fit and Sizing Considerations
The Aspen Hat pattern includes multiple sizes to accommodate different head circumferences. The designer emphasizes that the pattern contains approximately 2 inches of negative ease, meaning the finished hat will be slightly smaller than the wearer's head measurement. This negative ease creates the snug, beanie-style fit. Knitters are advised to carefully consider fit when selecting which size to knit, and the included slouchy hat adjustment provides flexibility for those preferring a more relaxed silhouette.
